History Algoma University

Imagine stepping back into the early 19th century. Envision a visionary leader in Chief Shingwauk reigning over the Garden River Ojibway people. He had an extraordinary vision: the Ojibway, he believed, had to embrace a foreign, academic mode of education to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Now, this dream wasn't realised in his lifetime, but by 1872, thanks to his sons, Chiefs Augustin and Buhkwujjenene Shingwauk, and Rev. Edward Francis Wilson, an Anglican Missionary, a residential school was born.

The opening scene still retains the freshness of a new build somewhere in Garden River First Nation, 1873. With only 16 students, it was full of promise, only to be consumed by fire after six days. Not discouraged, they swiftly reconstructed the school in Sault Ste. Marie by 1875.

Fast-forward, and you'd see how Shingwauk Hall veered off Chief Shingwauk’s original vision, becoming a cog in the infamous residential schools’ grim narrative - transforming Indigenous peoples of Canada at a heavy cost: abuse, neglect, and separation from the family.

Shingwauk Hall, standing erect since 1935, holds the tale of centuries past as the primary structure of today's Algoma University. In 1970, it bid adieu to its function as a residential school, shifting the initial course of its history.

The Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA), Residential School Survivors and First Nations have contributed to retelling the history. At the heart of this effort lies ‘Reclaiming Shingwauk Hall’, the first ever Survivor-driven exhibition in a former Residential School building, changing hallways and former auditoriums into spaces teeming with stories of resilience and courage. Their efforts have been recognised far and wide, as evidenced by the prestigious 2023 Ontario Museum Association (OMA) Award of Excellence in Exhibitions.

In a parallel narrative, a civil movement during the 1950s aimed to establish an undergraduate liberal arts college in Sault Ste. Marie. It was in October 1964 that the Algoma College Association became a formal body, and on Dec. 17, 1965, Algoma University College formed an alliance with Laurentian University.

Inching forward to 1967, under Principal Reverend Charles A. Krug's gaze, Algoma University College welcomed its first 77 students at what is now Sault College. By 1970, part-time enrolment had expanded to over 1,000 students!

Fast forward a couple of years to 1971, Algoma University College leveled up, offering courses that allowed students to study beyond the first-year level, flourishing further in September 1971 when it relocated to Shingwauk Hall.

The Shingwauk Project, originated in 1979, played a crucial role in nurturing the bond between First Nations people and the institution while the creation of the Thunderbird emblem by Dora de Pedery-Hunt in 1972 further bolstered its identity.

Year after year, Algoma University College expanded its campus, adding more amenities, enhancing academic programs, and laying the foundation for honour programs in Arts and Science.

In 2006, they reaffirmed their bond with the First Nations. Twelve years later, the school declared its independence from Laurentian University in 2007, becoming a fully-fledged university, ready to confer degrees to its students. This exciting journey, originating from Chief Shingwauk's vision, stands today as Algoma University, ready to welcome you into its rich history and dynamic future.
