Once upon a time in the far off land of Canada, around 1911, a team of visionaries had a light bulb moment. They realized that they wanted to shape the crème de la crème of the society, so they went ahead and built Waterloo Lutheran University. Bingo! That's how the Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU), formerly called the Waterloo Lutheran University, came into existence.
Zap! Fast forward 20 long years and a dashing new university president, Dr. William J. Villaume, came on the scene. At the wheel, he tackled around and steered the good ole university on a growth trajectory. This period: it was like a wild rain dance, just a lot more academic, and a whole lot less wet!
Like a bollywood plot twist, in 1960 the Seminary asked itself a key question, "Why stop at being just an affiliated college in the University of Western Ontario?" It was time to break the shackles and knock the socks off of everyone. Isn't it, how you guys feel before leaving to study abroad?
Anyhoo, moving along, the Seminary blew out its metaphorical candles, wished itself a happy birthday, and when it opened its eyes, behold! There it was, a full-fledged university. Well, kind of… it took an Act of Parliament in Ontario in 1973 and voila! We shed our 'Waterloo Lutheran University' skin and wore our new 'Wilfrid Laurier University' persona.
The next two decades were, as you might say, nothing less than a blockbuster! The Brantford campus was established. This period saw a mad growth spurt like a teenager hitting puberty, with new faculties, new programs, bulging student population and a greatly increased research profile. Talk about going from being an ugly duckling to a graceful swan!
Now, WLU’s footprint has truly become global. Reaching far and wide, 13,000 full-time undergraduate students, and more than 1,000 full and part-time graduate students are part of Laurier's lively community. Laughter echoes in the corridors as students whiz by on their way to classes. It’s a home, away from home.
Got talent shows, and cricket club matches bring vibrancy and fun, the ‘desi’ way. There are opportunities for internships and co-op programs that offer industry ready exposure. Who knows, you could return to India as the next global product!
The ‘Indus Laurier’ club is the heart of the Indian community within the university. It’s the go-to place for folks missing home, and trust me, the samosas here are to die for!
The University doesn't rest on its success story so far. It's constantly innovating, pushing boundaries and at the same time focusing on sustainability. Just like a Bollywood movie, the university is full of colour, friendship, ever-unfolding drama, and growth. Really makes you think, "Paisa Vasool" (worth the money), right?
So dear Indian parents and students, choosing Laurier isn't just about cutting-edge academics and highly respected faculty, it’s also about the experience. It’s your chance to audition for the biggest blockbuster of your life and proclaim "I am coming, University!" Let dreams take flight and let success make a loud noise!
