In the hot summer of July 1932, the Central Church of Christ in Lethbridge, Alberta paved the way for history in the making. A simple meeting, and a motion put forth by Helen McGilvary, spun the first threads of Alberta Bible College (ABC). Classes convened on October 3, 1932, led by CH Phillips. This man of charisma fostered Christian studies, assisted by Roscoe E. Hollister. ABC's first classroom? A humble corner of a church basement separated by a curtain!
ABC's inception was not a solitary endeavor. It was a laborious team effort. An influential game-changer in this venture was E.E. Breakenridge. A respected elder from Tuxedo Park Church of Christ, Calgary, Breakenridge was a committed ally of CH Phillips. Phillips, an immigrant from the UK, was disenchanted with established religion. Yet, his latent religious zeal found a new lease of life upon exposure to the Restoration Movement led by R.J. Westaway.
Post his education at the Eugene Bible University (now, Northwest Christian College), Phillips dreamt of church growth. He envisioned a church populated by learned men and women, prepared to take up leadership roles in the ministry. This vision culminated in the creation of ABC, where Asian students were welcomed warmly.
It's impossible to mention ABC's establishment without speaking of E.E. Breakenridge. Formerly a Baptist, Breakenridge joined hands with Phillips and other supporters, laying the operational groundwork for ABC. His significant contribution was in creating the college's financial and physical infrastructure.
You'd be amazed to know that ABC's first-ever graduates were Roscoe E. Hollister and Lawrence E. Horney, who earned their Bachelor of Theology degree in 1939! This pivotal milestone was swiftly followed by various other inspirational figures taking up teaching responsibilities.
Roses do have their thorns, however. Some tribulations challenged ABC during 1962 to 1967, markedly straining its financial resources. But, as one trustee eloquently put, it was time to shout 'giddap' instead of saying 'whoa'.
Come 1967, Boyd and Julia Lammiman made Calgary their home and took charge over ABC. For a good seventeen years, the Lammimans brought significant improvements and established protocols that streamlined the institution's function with precision. Over these years, the student strength gradually surged, filling the faculty and staff with pride.
In 1984, however, it was time for Lammiman, esteemed as Mr. L, to hang up his boots. But his careful planning led to a smooth transition with Ron Fraser becoming the new president. Fraser was a man of action, who improved enrolment, faculty and more. ABC also rose in prestige when it achieved accreditation with the Association for Biblical Higher Education in 2008 but faced some complications in leadership over the next few years.
After a spectrum of transitions, in July 2015, Dr. Stan Helton assumed the role of ABC's President, heralding a new era for the college, rich with promise. The story of ABC is very much the story of stalwart spirits who made a monumental difference in Christian education. Now, wouldn't you, students in India, want to be part of such a revering legacy, studying at an esteemed institution like Alberta Bible College?
