In the spirited year of 1835, a vision was born within a man named Basil Manly Sr. He dreamt of a sanctuary for Baptist learning in the south. For the next 20 exhilarating years, he vigorously steered the course for this dream to materialise into the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
1856 was an auspicious year for this dream. A group of determined South Carolina Baptists convened in Greenville, South Carolina, under the guidance of James P. Boyce. Their noble intent was to collect enough resources to finance this ambitious seminary. Coming together in agreement, they pledged an impressive $100,000 towards establishing a theological school. The next year, Boyce skillfully persuaded the convention attendees in Louisville, KY to make a school that had only been a dream. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary became a reality in fall 1859.
Fast forward a few years, they began their academic journey, setting off with an enthusiastic batch of 26 students. This excitement, however, was short-lived as they had to pause operations from 1861-1865 because of the American Civil War. This setback was a blessing in disguise, making way for fresh excitement from Boyce and the Board of Trustees. It led them to relocate to Louisville, Kentucky, where the seminary resides today.
With the year 1889 came another tide of change. The seminary welcomed its second President, John A. Broadus. Experimenting with newer opportunities, it started offering Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) as graduate degrees from the early 1890s. Controversy and adversity struck under the third President (William Whitsitt) regarding Landmarkism amongst Baptists. But the seminary soldiered on, embracing E.Y. Mullins (namesake of the legendary Boyce College dorm) as their new leader. During his tenure, Southern Seminary announced an enviable endowment of an estimated 1.8 million dollars.
No one can deny the roaring times of the early 1900s, especially when women were finally being accepted into classes! Duke McCall took up the President's mantle in 1951. You can imagine the Seminary pioneering new routes under McCall's discerning leadership. They opened up the School of Religious Education for nurturing Christian education enthusiasts and launched three academic schools: School of Religious Education, School of Theology, and the School of Music. Their commitment to dedication saw them dedicate a chair to the American evangelist Billy Graham in 1966.
Adding to their line-up of progressive initiatives, Southern started offering the Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) in 1970. With McCall at the helm, enrollment reached a whopping 1,500 students. You can perceive McCall's far-reaching vision when Boyce College got established as an adult education program in 1974.
The year 1981 brought in a wave of change; Roy Honeycutt took over as the 8th President of Southern. His impressive efforts led to the opening of Carver School of Church Social Work and Southern's student enrollment peaking in 1986. At the helm, Honeycutt bravely navigated Southern Baptist Convention's tough times.
Come 1993, Southern saw the ascension of R. Albert Mohler as the 9th President. Championing belief and unity, he made every faculty sign "Abstract of Principles" and the "Baptist Faith and Message," which reiterated that the Bible is without error. Boyce Bible College, revamped into an undergraduate college, flourished under Mohler.
Culminating in 2017, Southern Seminary celebrated its highest enrollment - a staggering 5,000 students! As of 2021–2022, Southern thrives with 4,448 enrolled students. It's an ever-evolving story, one that brims with excitement, challenges, and endless possibilities.
