North Island College took its roots back in 1975. Its mission was clear and ambitious - to bring post-secondary education to around 157,000 residents scattered across an extensive 80,000 km2 area on Vancouver Island. Driven by this mission, Dr. Dennis Wing and his team pioneered the open learning concept in British Columbia. Undeterred by lack of internet or computer networks, they engaged tutors who would guide students through courses in makeshift classrooms aboard buses or even an old whaling boat named the Samarinda.
In these unconventional settings, students found a place to observe, learn, and earn university degrees. For instance, psychology and sociology courses were broadcasted via the Knowledge Network under the stewardship of NIC instructors like Dr. Michael Catchpole and Roger Albert. Tutors, including Nigel and Adele Bailey, ventured out to teach subjects like English and math to loggers and their families residing in Woss Lake.
The 1990s brought the demand for more structured learning environments. Tuning into this need, Dr. Neil Murphy and his team rolled up their sleeves, and their effort resulted in the establishment of actual campuses. Comox Valley campus welcomed students in 1992 with Port Alberni and Campbell River campuses throwing open their gates in 1995 and 1997, respectively. As full-time enrolment soared, the college introduced fine arts, health and trades programs to cater to local demands.
The journey into the new millennium set NIC on a new course. Under Dr. Lou Dryden's leadership, the college built regional Indigenous advisory councils, collaborating with 35 First Nations. This participatory approach allowed communities to voice their desired programs, ranging from bookkeeping and early childhood education to aquaculture. Dr. Dryden's significant contribution to the nurturing of NIC is celebrated through the naming of Dr. Lou Dryden Trades Training Atrium at the Comox Valley Campus’ Trades Training Centre in 2019.
In 2009, Dr. Jan Lindsay took the reins of NIC. It was during her tenure that the college saw an unprecedented surge in international enrolment. Forging new partnerships with global universities, she oversees the creation of new programs and degree pathways, opening up opportunities for the college's students.
John Bowman, who assumed presidency in 2013, continued the college's expansion, both in Programs and infrastructure. Bowman led a $18-million expansion and renovation of NIC's Campbell River campus. He also clinched an agreement to convert the former St. Joseph’s Hospital site into a learning hub for health and human services programs (NIC @ St. Joe’s), earning him a special place in NIC's history.
As of now, the college is under the able leadership of Dr. Lisa Domae, who took office as President & CEO on April 12, 2021. Her story within the folds of NIC's history is yet to be told, and it could very well be your story too, entwined with hers.
