Back in 1971, when disco fever was taking over the world, a hard rock miner named James Patterson created a small revolution in the quiet town of Kimberley, BC. Not by striking gold, but by recognizing the desperate need for an apprenticeship training platform. This humble miner was not just wielded a pickaxe; he was also part of the local school board. Driven by his growth-oriented vision, Patterson initiated the process to establish a local vocational school.
Four years later, on a beautiful spring day - May 8, 1975 - East Kootenay Community College (EKCC) came to life with a decree from the government. The place for the main campus? Cranbrook, a beautiful city nestled in the Rocky Mountain Trench. As the word about the much-awaited venture started spreading, the community responded with overwhelming enthusiasm. The first academic year saw 351 zealous students in Cranbook, 64 in Kimberley, 52 in Fernie, 39 in Golden, and 37 in Invermere.
In a significant milestone, a massive $1.4 million was given green light for a campus building in February 1978. The joyful earth-breaking ceremony took place in April 1980. And until the new campus was ready, the eager learners found their classrooms in 17 disparate locations in Cranbrook.
It was a landmark day for EKCC when on September 20, 1982, the official opening of the Cranbrook Campus took place. The '70s might have been the 'me decade,' but the '80s were definitely the 'we decade' for EKCC. With new facilities opening in Invermare (March 1988) and Fernie (October 1989), the college was on a building spree, which continued well into the '90s.
The roaring '90s brought further expansion. New campus buildings sprouted in Golden (May 1992), and Creston (May 1995). Meanwhile, the Cranbrook Campus expanded its physical horizons by an astonishing 30,000 sq feet, birthing a Health wing, Professional Cook Training facilities, and a Mechanics shop.
Adding academic colours to its cap, EKCC began offering Associate Degrees in Arts and Sciences for the first time in the 1993 academic year. By 1995, the college had changed more than just its academic offerings. In a rebranding exercise, EKCC became the College of the Rockies (COTR). The end of the '90s saw a transition to the digital era with COTR's first online course, Applied Research Methods, in January 1997.
Levelling up its sporting game, COTR made a stir in the sports world by introducing the Avalanche men's and women's volleyball teams in 1997/98. The same year, the name 'College of the Rockies' was officially trademarked.
A flurry of noteworthy events flanked the new millennium. By March 1, 2000, College of the Rockies’ Arms were officially registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority. Two years later, in October 2002, the campus welcomed a new childcare facility, Kids on Campus.
And by November 2004, transforming the conventional classroom experience, a wireless network for student laptops was installed at the Cranbrook Campus. Not just that, the Cranbrook Campus marked 2007 with a significant expansion worth $16.2 million (CDN), embracing a new Academic building and a Trades facility.
In 2009, blazing forward in the wake of the global recession, COTR received a grant of $12.7 million (CDN) from the Federal and Provincial governments. The funds were a part of the Knowledge Infrastructure Program to upgrade and expand the Cranbrook campus buildings. And like always, COTR made it happen - not just on time, but ahead of schedule in October, 2010. Celebrating this landmark achievement, a grand opening video became the toast of the town.
So, there it is - over four decades of transforming the world one student at a time. That's the legacy of the College of the Rockies. And as they say, the rest is history.
