Once upon a time, tucked neatly in Canada's wide prairie city, Edmonton, a young little institution called the University of Alberta or UAlberta, first opened its doors - we're in fall 1908, chaps. Now, this wasn't just your typical university. Oh no, this was a prime education hub, everything under a single roof, from medicine to arts, the first of its kind in Alberta!
Imagine a world 113 years ago - Henry Marshall Tory, the university’s founding president, daring to start a university in these parts. Bold move, right? But you see, this chap was a visionary, on a mission -“to uplift the whole people,” as he said. Not just the rich or the fancy-pants, the entire local community. A place for everybody, where every Tom, Dick, and Harry could enter, free from the shackles of elitism.
Around this time, the university was a teeny little baby, with only 37 students embarking on this academic journey. The faculty wasn't too big either, just four stern, yet affable, professors. Call it humble beginnings if you will, but this was all about to change, and how!
Fast-forward to the 1920s - mighty winds of change swept across UAlberta. Suddenly, the university grew more legs - well, colleges, really. More faculties came to be, including the standalone Faculties of Medicine, Education...the list goes on, folks. What was once a teeny baby, now, was becoming a tween!
Now let's jump to the swinging 60s. Bam! The university took a leap and started campuses both here and there, throughout the enormous Alberta province. And guess what, one of them was in the icy (but beautiful) Canadian Arctic. Brrr…have you got your winter gear ready?
Now, let's get a bit nerdy and throw some handsome numbers in there. Today, UAlberta welcomes over 40,000 students – that's the population of a small town! Plus, and this is a big plus, it offers more than 500 graduate programs, 200 undergraduate programs, and...wait for it...18 faculties. How’s that for an education buffet, eh?
But wait, there's more. UAlberta has one of the most massive collections of library resources, worth a whopping $1.2 million! From rare books and manuscripts to online databases, it’s like Disneyland for research fanatics.
But here's the cherry on the pie. UAlberta boasts 17 specialized research centres focusing on diverse areas – from health to engineering to humanities, covering all bases in the research playground.
It's safe to say UAlberta has come a long way since 1908, blooming into a giant that it is today. Its history is kind of a charming story, a story of tenacity, vision and of course, lots of brains. So, whether you're an ardent academian, a research fanatic or an ambitious student from India, who wants to savor quality education in a vibrant multicultural campus, UAlberta is a rich, creamy slice of the educational pie cooked for you. Go ahead, grab a piece!
And remember, as UAlberta folks like to say, “Whatsoever things are true,” find them here. Well, that sums it up, innit?
