Picture this - It's 1944, and a group of visionaries gather at a camp meeting in Trossachs. Their mission? To establish a Bible school for the ACOP church community, then known as the "Full Gospel Missions Fellowship". Five men, Glen McLean, Lorne Pritchard, Ron Burnside, Elmer Powers, and Harold Hollands, were given this monumental task. Armed with faith and determination, these were the pioneers who created the Full Gospel Bible Institute (FGBI), opening its doors on November 6, 1944 with a mere six students.
Fast forward to today and you're looking at a campus located in the quiet town of Eston. But why did they choose this location? Well, several sites were on the table including Pangman and Trossachs, SK, and of course, Eston SK. G. S. McLean's connection to Eston and the eagerness of local churches to donate a site might have been the deciding factors.
The humble beginnings of the FGBI were nothing more than an old farmhouse and the use of the local Full Gospel Church. However, the institute's value was quickly recognized as by the end of the second term in 1945 - the students quadrupled to 18! And how could they not? Given the caliber of the teaching staff, like Rev. W. B. Marshall along with his dedicated wife and others - their commitment to providing quality Bible education set the standard for FGBI's future.
Fast forward again, this time to 1953. An important merger between FGBI and the Apostolic Missionary Training Institute (AMTI) was being finalized. This was in line with the merge between the ACOP and the Evangelical Churches of Pentecost. It was deemed unnecessary to operate two Bible schools. Hence, precious AMTI closed down, and its students were happily welcomed into FGBI.
Talk about enduring leadership, G. S. McLean served as the President of FGBI for 39 impressive years witnessing the institute grow from 6 to 187 students in 1976 - its peak so far! Under his tenure, not only did the student body grow but the campus developed remarkably too. Hosting numerous conferences, opening the A. D. Marshall Library, The Bible and Science Department, and establishing the FGBI Press and the Summer Institute of Missions, were some of the landmark accomplishments during his period.
In the year 1983, an important shift in Leadership occurred. Rev. Alan Mortensen was appointed as the president and Willard Mitchell, the vice president. Despite this change, McLean continued to contribute his wisdom and experience to FGBI as the Chancellor until he passed in 2000. With Mortensen at the helm, the college faced serious challenges, like a tragic fire destroying the chapel. However, these obstacles only led to further development and expansion on campus.
In 1997 Todd Atkinson took the reins as president. His tenure saw some significant developments including a move towards acquiring accreditation so that the institute could offer degrees and transferrable credits.
Just two years later, in 1999 Lauren Miller was appointed president. During her 10-year tenure, the name of the Institute changed twice, finally settling on "Eston College" in 2007. Under her guidance, Eston acquired a complete 5-year initial accreditation in May 2007 and started granting Bachelor of Biblical Studies Degrees and Diploma upgrades to former and currently enrolled students.
The year 2008 witnessed yet another change in Leadership with Brian Fuller taking over as president. Fuller's tenure is marked by financial stability with the clearing of all debts and improved facilities on campus. Eston College passed ABHE reaccreditation in 2012 and got a recommendation for 10 years from ABHE.
In 2019, Brenda Frost took charge as the interim president. By 2020, the dynamic Sean Stevenson-Douglas was back in Canada from a 6-year mission stint in the Near East to become the President of Eston College.
Fast forward to the future, in 2022, Eston College revolutionizes learning by implementing a new modular learning system where courses are delivered in blocks of three weeks each. And by 2023, they've taken a giant leap, relocating to Regina, Saskatchewan. Currently, the campus bustles within Regina Apostolic Church. Enjoying the story so far?
