Once upon a time, in the magical land of the Maple Leaf, marked the arrival of this educational gem, the University of Calgary! Begun its majestic journey on April 29, 1966, you see. But whoa, hang on! It’s tale dates back a bit further. Originally established in 1945 as the Calgary branch of the University of Alberta, it started as a place of humble beginnings, you might say. Imagine the scene – about 150 students getting together in huts of a decommissioned airbase. Well, that's what the University of Calgary used to be!
Four years later, 1949 it was, the administration pulled off a stellar act by inviting maverick architect and urban designer Dr. John Andrew Allan to shape its destiny. Now, you might be wondering why. You see, the good folks believed that a well-designed campus could do wonders for learning. And indeed, it did. In no time, Calgary was well on its path to creating a vibrant and congenial learning environment that whispered innovation and big ideas.
But the real deal starts in 1960 when the wheels began spinning to pack Calgary off as an independent entity. By then, it was bursting at the seams with a whopping 14,000 students. And hey, they needed more room to breathe! Thus, the tireless efforts of few good men, like then Premier of Alberta, Mr. Ernest Manning, brought this idea to life.
Fast forward to April 1966, the University of Calgary got its own leg to stand on. Sweet sixteen milestone, you could say! Over the next few years, trails were blazed, challenges were met, and accomplishments were strung together as the university grew and changed with each academic year. An exciting adventure of growth and experience, that’s been the journey of the University of Calgary.
As the 70s rolled along, the campus saw a veritable building boom that spelled colourful diversity. From the social sciences to the fine arts, the place was cookin' with a diverse mix of intellect and creativity. What’s more, they even pulled off getting their own radio station in 1972. Cool stuff, ain't it?
Then came the 80s. A time of new age technology and international fame, gimme a high five to that! Brought into the spotlight were the University's massive world-class sports facilities? You might wonder why. Well, that’s because the University of Calgary hosted athletes from all over the world during the 1988 Winter Olympics.
And onto the 90s, an era of growth and global recognition. Beaming with academic grandeur, they clinched the title of a major research institution in Canada. As if that weren't enough, the year 1999 saw the University going digital with e-learning initiatives. An exciting global classroom, if I may say so!
Zooming into 2007, here's a tickle-your-funny-bone fact – the university thought it'd be a hoot to have its very own satellite! Yup, you heard it right. Launched their very first satellite, U of C, as they normally call it, became the first Canadian university to do so! Fancy that?
And folks, that brings us to today. With over 33,000 students from 152 different countries, the University of Calgary has transformed itself into a global educational leader.
