The University of British Columbia – ring bells, eh? Well, let me take you on a riveting rollercoaster ride through the annals of history. Back in 1877, way before Instagram or Netflix were even a twinkle in anyone’s eyes, BC's Provincial Secretary spilt the beans about this grand idea. It was Mr. Henry Crease who basically kick-started the grand plan of setting up a university in British Columbia.
Fast forward to 1890, the wheels were in motion and the McGill University of British Columbia was established. Pretty spiffy, right? But, hang on, don't get used to the name...I sense a plot twist. Spoiler alert -the name didn’t stick, alas.
You see, good folks, by the time the 20th century unrolled its carpet, in 1915 to be exact, it was agreed in the corridors of power that it was high time to cut ties with McGill, making way for the fancy, independent, and befitting name we recognize today – The University of British Columbia.
Now, all great stories need a heroic figure, right? And this isn’t any different! Get ready to give a standing ovation to the French-Canadian Dr. Frank Fairchild Wesbrook. The fine gentleman occupied the first president’s chair of UBC in 1913. Bless his cotton socks, old Wesbrook put in the hard yards, leading the construction of the best in class facilities that revolutionized education in Canada.
“Where”, I hear you ask? Well, it was, and still is, located on Point Grey, a place so beautiful it would knock your socks off – trust me! It was only in 1925 that classes first started on these handsome grounds.
Lest we forget, a word of mention for the world-class library system. On a chilly October day way back in 1925, we saw the first brick being laid down for the library. The development sure gave a tough time to the architects, but hey, Rome wasn't built in a day, eh?
Moving rapidly along, in the 1940s, UBC gave a warm Canadian welcome to returning World War II vets, offering academic refuge. A fair shake of the sauce bottle and they had produced top-notch professionals in no time who added immense value to the Canadian economy.
In the blink of an eye, UBC saw significant changes in the 1960s. More faculties, more students, more, more, fair dinkum! It became a hub of social dynamism, with protests and societal involvement – risky business, but worth every bit.
So, chuck a sickie, pull up a chair, and let me tell you, the spirit of UBC continued to roar in the new millennium. Attention shifted towards internationalization, turning UBC into a choicest destination for Indian students.
Well, that's it, folks! The long and short of it is that UBC has been running, tripping, and sometimes even crawling, from 1877 till today just to capture the essence of academic excellence. Brilliant, isn’t it? Now’ that’s a story for the grandkids!
