About a century ago, back in 1919, a unique entity burst into the realm of Canadian academics - the Ursuline College. It was the brainchild of the Ursulines, an organisation of devout Catholic women. Originally, 556 Wellington Street, London, Ontario, was a humble old house that served as the launching pad for this venture. The college quickly formed a partnership with the University of Western Ontario, allowing its graduates to earn impeccable degrees from the reputed university. It opened its doors initially to a batch of seven motivated young women who paid a tuition fee of $50.
Shortly thereafter, in 1923, the Ursuline Superior General, Mother Clare Gaukler, embarked on an ambitious project. She bought a valuable plot at 1285 Western Road, London, and entrusted the builder Joseph Michael Piggot with the task of erecting a permanent structure. By 1925, classes and residence swung into full action in this new building, christened as Brescia Hall, later renamed Ursuline Hall.
At its cradle, Brescia was notable for its liberal arts courses. Ambitious young women had the opportunity to explore academic fields such as English, French, Spanish, Philosophy, History, Classics, and Religious Knowledge. Brescia students could also spread their academic wings at Western, studying subjects like Science, Mathematics, and Political Economy. Interestingly, Brescia soon moulded some of its core courses, like Philosophy, to be more apposite and secular for Catholic women.
Additional dynamism was infused as 1936 saw the inception of a Home Economics programme. Evolution is key to survival, and this programme is a testament to that. It metamorphosed into what currently stands as the renowned Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
Our curriculum's epic journey took a fascinating turn in 1963. Ursuline College underwent a radical transformation, becoming Brescia College. It adopted the name of the distinguished Italian city where the Ursuline religious institute first saw the daylight. Nearly four decades later, the institution rejoiced in another defining moment with its transition to Brescia University College in 2001.
The onset of the 21st Century saw Brescia embarking on a new educational voyage. The university kick-started its first graduate program in 2007. Not resting on its laurels, Brescia introduced a ground-breaking degree in non-profit management a decade later.
But the future holds an uncertain fate for Brescia. On 21 September 2023, a shocking announcement came from Western University stating its intention to fully integrate Brescia into Western. Expected to conclude by May 2024, this plan will lead to Brescia entirely winding down and halting operations. Western University plans to carry forward Brescia's legacy with a significant $25 million fund for continuing students, but this news has stirred waves of discontent. On 27 September, about 300 Brescia students united in a rally, expressing their vehement opposition to this decision. For them, Brescia is not just a university but a history etched in their hearts—a tradition that they're not ready to give up.
