On a splendid spring day of 5th May 1863, an intriguing tale began in the realm of academics; a narrative we now regard as the glorious legacy of Huron University College. The college's birth was a joint effort of Benjamin Cronyn, the first Bishop of Huron, and Isaac Hellmuth, the Archdeacon. They envisioned a university that was evangelical and low-church, contrasting the high-church Trinity University in Toronto.
So, who were the initial torchbearers? Thirteen brave students, guided by Isaac Hellmuth, who happened to be Huron’s first principal, formed the inaugural class in the chilling winter of 1863. At the heart of this establishment was the evangelical section of the Church of England which secured a charter for Huron in 1878. It was fondly called the Western University of London.
From 1878 onwards, Huron established itself as a founding institution of the University of Western Ontario. In fact, the esteemed architect William A. Joanes lent his genius to Huron University College in 1891 and constructed a magnificent addition to the original property.

Over a fifth of all Canadian Anglican chaplains that valiantly served during the First and Second World Wars polished their skills at Huron. A tribute to this fact is displayed on a plaque that was unveiled on 11th November 1997 to honor 18 Huron graduates who made the supreme sacrifice during the wars.
Once upon a time, Huron existed in a place called Rough Park, nestled within the realms of Grosvenor, St. George, and St. James Streets. A monumental shift occurred in 1951, and the fortress of knowledge moved to its current location.
