In the year of 1949, the ink was still fresh on the birth certificate of the United Baptist Bible Training School (UBBTS). Founded by the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada, this institution tossed its hat into the ring of both spiritual and academic education. Serving as both a Bible school and a high school, the journey for UBBTS was only about to start.
Within the passage of two decades, a gentle but perceptible shift occurred within UBBTS. The dedicated individuals leading this institution recognised the increasing necessity for more advanced education, initiating a transition towards focused post-secondary programs. This journey of transformation found another milestone in 1968 when UBBTS rebirth itself to become a Bible and junior Christian liberal arts college.
A couple of years later in 1970, this ever-evolving institution adopted another identity - becoming the Atlantic Baptist College (ABC). A steadfast campaign aimed at enhancing the faculty and the quality of education was launched by the driven souls of ABC. Their efforts bore fruit in 1983 when ABC succeeded in granting full Bachelor of Arts degrees to its students. By this time, their campus had taken roots along the Salisbury Road, west of Moncton's central business district.
The narrative of progress for ABC didn't stop there, as the institution proved its dynamism once again in 1996. A move to a newly constructed campus on the Gorge Road, north of the city centre became a symbolic representation of their continued evolution. With this, the name Atlantic Baptist University (ABU) was ushered in, reflecting the enlargement of their student body and accreditations.
Sprinkling a touch of vibrancy into the ever-strengthening academic fabric of ABU, their athletic contingent embraced the identity of 'The Blue Tide' in 2003. ABU now stood as the only English-language university in Moncton, a label it still wears proudly.
In 2008, the Atlantic Baptist University Act was authenticated by the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. This official recognition signified the ceaseless growth and achievement of this university in the region.
An announcement that reverberated in the halls of ABU came on August 21, 2009. In a nod to Rev. Joseph Crandall, a symbol of pioneering Baptist ministry in the maritime region, the institution was christened as 'Crandall University'. Accompanying this was the athletic department's transition to a new identity as 'The Crandall Chargers'.
Crandall University, through its multi-layered history and transformations, has weathered the test of time to stand tall today, boasting an educational legacy second to none.
