Between you and me, tickling the ivories or belting out a high note doesn't just happen overnight, right? Let's take a stroll down memory lane and trace back the roots of the Conservatory of Music, a place that turned into a home for numerous virtuosos over time.
The red-letter year was 1867, when the first brick of this institution was laid. Founders were not just blokes with a love for music; they wanted to create a space, where students could foster their gift for music. The very spirit of the Conservatory was to transmute raw talent into masterpiece performers.
For over a century and a half, the Conservatory held sway. It’s been in the driver's seat from the word go, setting the pace for music education globally. Our journey started with a handful of 13 music enthusiasts in 1867 and currently, boasting over 900 students from diverse backgrounds.
In the midst of all hustle-bustle of the Conservatory, let's dial back the clock and meet a trailblazer whose imprint is still felt today—Dr. Joel (Joey, as his students loved to say) Mathias, an absolute whizz at rotis...I mean symphonies! He came into the picture in 1920, added a punch of energy into the existing curriculum, and developed an exclusive Bachelor program in music.
Joey’s modification was a smash hit among the students. And you know what’s more? They started performing at a prestigious stage—Carnegie Hall, which was then a fair dinkum bloke's dream. Fast forward, and it's now become a tradition. Ah well, what’s a big-time music academy without grand performances, right?
In the late '70s, the Conservatory hit another bumpy road— the advent of electronic music, initially seen as a wet blanket, rocked the traditional values. However, our visionary leaders didn't drop the ball. They decided to roll with it and, in 1983; a new curriculum incorporated electronic music.
Off tangent, but mind you, the Conservatory didn’t stop at that. The arrival of the new millennium saw the launch of a global exchange program. Psst, that's where you, my young Indian virtuosos, come in! From rehearsing raga to presenting it on international soil, wouldn’t that be a sight for sore eyes?
Here’s the golden bit about our institution—we believe in expanding our family tree, and every international student who joins us adds a new leaf to it. By the by, we’ve been recognised repeatedly for our diversity, including the trophy we bagged in 2018 for the “Best Institution for International Students”.
So, the next time you plonk yourself in front of a keyboard or blow the dust off your flute, remember, the Conservatory of Music has a rich and vibrant history waiting for you to explore it! Give it a burl and who knows, you may end up hitting the high notes in your musical journey.
