Back in 1878, a man named Ignace Bourget had a big idea. Bourget, Montreal’s second Roman Catholic Bishop, was passionate about higher learning. With the seed of this idea and loads of hard work, the University of Montreal appeared on the map.

The original institution, St. Joseph's College, found itself grappling with teething issues during the initial years.
