Imagine a time back in the late 1960s, when the school boards of North and West Vancouver, Howe Sound, and Sechelt started dreaming about a community college. A place where all the future scholars of the region could come together to learn and grow. After much deliberation and voting in 1968, their ambitious dream was approved by the provincial government - this was the moment when Capilano College was born. Its proud name was chosen by the residents of North Shore to honour Chief Joe Capilano of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Coast Salish nation.
On September 10, 1968, the doors of Capilano College first opened. You might envision grand halls and purpose-built classrooms, right? Well, in fact, the humble beginnings of the college consisted of evening classes in West Vancouver Secondary with barely 784 students. Two years later, the Capilano College Foundation was established, aiming to empower more students with scholarships and bursaries.
The growth story continued. In 1970, the construction of the North Vancouver campus began in the Lynnmour area. Fast forward three years, and the shiny new campus welcomed 1,965 students with open arms. Its first vocational programs were delivered in makeshift portable buildings, a far cry from the high-tech facilities you're used to now. And guess what's the first permanent structure was? The original library building! Isn't it great to know your university prioritized knowledge from the very beginning?
As the college expanded, so did its presence. In 1975, the Squamish Learning Centre and Community Information Services came to life in downtown Squamish. Meanwhile, the North Vancouver campus gradually bloomed with the introduction of the Arbutus building in 1976 and the Fir building in 1982.
Fast-forward to the 90s. The college witnessed a significant face-lift. First came the Cedar building, the Sportsplex, and Horticulture building in 1991. Then two years later, the old library made way for a brand-new one, three times the size of the original! To round off the decade, 1996 saw the completion of the Birch building, housing a performance theatre, classrooms, student services, and teaching space. It's also the year the Child Care Centre opened.
But Capilano College wasn't just expanding within its North Vancouver campus but branching out to new locations. In 1977, the university opened its doors to the Capilano kálax-ay Sunshine Coast campus in Sechelt and later, in 2019, the CapU Lonsdale campus.
At the same time, the academic offerings of Capilano College were also shaping up. In 1990, the college introduced its first bachelor degree program - a collaborative degree in music therapy - in partnership with the British Columbia Open University. Not to forget, a second music degree in jazz studies entered the scene in 1992. From the following year, business administration degrees and associate degrees were available across a spectrum of subjects, from Interdisciplinary Arts and Creative Writing to Psychology and Biology.
State legislation made history in 2003 when Capilano College was authorized to become the first institution in British Columbia to independently grant applied degrees.
