As the sun set on a fateful day in 1938, a group of progressive thinkers from Ottawa's YMCA chapter gathered around a table. Their agenda? To map out the blueprint for Ottawa's second higher education institution, aiming to cater to the vast non-Catholic community creating a meaningful educational body. However, the eruption of the Second World War diverted their commitment elsewhere, leaving their collective vision unrealized.
However, like a phoenix from the ashes, the idea was revived under the leadership of Henry Marshall Tory, who marked the birth of this educational institution at the end of 1941. Officially in the summer of 1942, Carleton College emerged as a welcome resource for continuing education. Starting humbly with rented classrooms in the High School of Commerce, the college offered a range of subjects, from English and French to algebra, trigonometry, chemistry, biology, and history. The end of the war ushered in a surging influx of veterans, expanding the student body to about 2,200 in 1946.
With rising demand, Carleton College was spread across multiple locations – from classrooms in Lisgar Collegiate Institute and Ottawa Technical High School to church basements. However, the academic portfolio also expanded, giving birth to the Faculty of Arts and Science along with added coursework in journalism and engineering.
The college soon found its first permanent home on the corner of Lyon Street and First Avenue in 1946. The strategic acquisition had been an all-girls school, Ottawa Ladies' College, which was remodeled as barracks during the war for the Canadian Women's Army Corps. This marked a milestone moment with the conferring of Carleton's first degrees in Journalism and Public Administration.
The struggles and challenges in the initial decade were overcome with community contributions, student fees, and tireless fundraising led by Tory. Despite the modest operation, the college crossed the mark of one million dollars in funds, divided equally to clear off the debt and to strengthen the college's endowment.
The next milestone was the development and adoption of Carleton College's crest and motto in 1951. The college's motto evolved over time, with various proposals rejected for being pretentious or previously adopted, resulting in its current motto, "Ours the task eternal."
In 1952, through the Carleton College Act, the college was bestowed the power to grant university degrees, thereby becoming an autonomous and non-sectarian educational body in Ottawa. Notable growth was witnessed over the years with the college becoming a university in 1957, and today's campus taking shape in 1959.
Over the years, Carleton University became a hub for burgeoning student communities from beyond the National Capital Region. It established sex-segregated residences in 1962, which got converted into co-educational housing in 1969, a first in North America. Carleton University collaborated with a Catholic liberal arts college, Saint Patrick's College, in 1967 to cater to Ottawa's English-speaking Catholic population.
Fast forward a few decades, and significant developments shaped the 21st-century face of the university. Expanded athletic facilities, sustainability-focused residence halls, and key academic buildings developed under President and Vice Chancellor, Roseann Runte, were noteworthy.
The digital age brought a buoyant wave in Carleton's journey in the late ’90s, extending internet and email access to all students and faculty. Despite facing a sharp decline in enrollments in the mid-’90s, it witnessed a spectacular resurgence in numbers through the 2000s.
The recent past has witnessed the construction of the cutting-edge Nicol Building, housing the Sprott School of Business. Carleton also tackled the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic quite efficiently. With suspended on-campus classes, the focus shifted to online teaching for the entire 2020, offering digital classes until the early months of 2021. With mass vaccination and infection control measures, the campus gradually opened for the 2021-22 academic year.
The rich history and resilient narratives of Carleton University continue till this date. Remaining true to its motto, "Ours the task eternal," it continues to serve, educate, and engage a diverse student body, fulfilling the mission envisioned by its founders seven decades ago.
