History University of Ottawa

Once upon a time, in the year 1848, precisely on September 26th, a new institution was born. It came into being as the College of Bytown, a great vision of Bishop Joseph-Bruno Guigues, Ottawa's first Roman Catholic bishop. He rallied the aid of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate to administer this young establishment.

In its earliest stages, the college found its home in Lower Town. Nestled right next to the stunning Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica, it was a sight to behold! However, the charming wooden edifice quickly turned cramped, leading to two swift moves in 1852 and an eventual settlement at Sandy Hill in 1856. This move became possible due to a remarkable bounty bestowed by Louis-Theodore Besserer, who generously donated a considerable portion of his estate to the college.

The institution underwent a name change in 1861, mirroring the transition of Bytown to Ottawa. Thus, the College of Ottawa was born. A mere five years later, this institution etched its name in history as the last Canadian institution to get a royal charter from London before education became a provincial responsibility under the British North America Act, 1867.

Fast forward to the year 1872. The university had taken bold strides to start conferring undergraduate degrees. In 1875, they moved a notch higher by offering master's degrees, and by 1888, they commenced granting doctoral degrees. On February 5th, 1889, Pope Leo XIII elevated the university to a pontifical status by granting a pontifical charter.

The turn of the century proved a challenging time. A massive fire on December 2nd, 1903, reduced the main building to ashes. Determined to rebuild, they commissioned the New York architect A. O. Von Herbulis to design Tabaret Hall in its place. They ensured that the new Canadian structure was entirely fireproof, constructed of reinforced concrete. By 1919, the university joined the league of change-makers by opening its doors to women.

The storm clouds of World War II started gathering in 1939. During that year, the university established a Canadian Officer Training Corps. In the subsequent years, it also created an air force Officers' Training Corps and a naval Officers' training corps. When the war's shadows finally enveloped the world, 1,158 students and alumni of the university joined the Canadian Forces, out of which 50 made the ultimate sacrifice.

In 1965, the university got reorganized as a public-funded corporation, independent of any outside body or religious organization. Meanwhile, the civil and pontifical charters were transferred to a newly created entity – the Saint Paul University. A few years later, in 1970, the university purchased a majestic property – 100 Laurier East, the oldest building in the campus.

Fast forward to 1989, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute witnessed an exceptional medical feat when Dr. Wilbert Keon performed the country's first neonatal artificial heart transplant on an 11-day-old infant. A few years later, in 1998, during the university's 150th-anniversary celebrations, they honored the 50 graduates who gave their lives during war times.

In recent years, the University of Ottawa has continued its tryst with significance. In 2005, it dedicated the engineering building, Colonel By Hall, to Lieutenant-Colonel John By, Royal Engineers. Despite hitting global headlines in 2020 due to a topic of academic freedom, the university, steeped in a colourful and engaging history, keeps moving forward, staying vibrant and dedicated to its mission.

Through its exciting and tumbling journey, the University of Ottawa has proven time and again, its resilience, innovation, and commitment to empowerment through education. Will you be a part of its next chapter?
