Do you recall hearing about how every great story begins? You know "Once upon a time," of course! Well, the opus of Okanagan College is no different and let me take you on a historical roller coaster that can give even the most captivating Bollywood movie a run for its money. Back in the day, actually specifically in 1963, the folks involved with the idea of education in British Columbia had a brain wave. The whisperings about a new college spread like a game of 'telephone', and voila, Okanagan College was no longer an idea, but a reality!
You wouldn't believe, initially, Okanagan started quite humbly. With just 39 chaps on board, OC began its journey in a little quaint town called Vernon. This was of course, before they realized how big of a hit they would be, I bet even they couldn’t predict their own blockbuster future!
Fast forward to 1969, and Okanagan was raring ahead like a horse at a derby. The college folk had a new feather in their cap - university transfer courses. Yeps, you got that right! Now, students could start off their journey here before moving onto other universities. Sounds like the plot twist of the year, don't you think?
Now, are you prepared for a shocker? In 1975, British Columbia Government, oh generous souls as they are, divided our beloved Okanagan College into three institutions - Okanagan College, Okanagan University College, and UBC Okanagan. This was one unexpected turn of events, a cliffhanger if you like, right out of a nail-biting thriller.
Cut to 2005, something utterly unexpected occurred, the tables turned yet again, and our ever-evolving Okanagan College was back to its original avatar! It reopened as a full-fledged college and came into its own.
The academics at Okanagan just kept getting better, more exciting, and much alluring. By 2011, OC was already neck-deep in academic brilliance offering four-year degree programs. It was like watching a nail-biting chase in an action thriller, with Okanagan in the lead, always!
Fast forward to today; Okanagan has grown with a pace faster than the speed of light. It's not the little college from Vernon anymore. With four thriving campuses and three satellite centres, OC has truly made its mark globally. Students flock in from every corner of the world, India included, to attend its world-class programs.
There's no telling what twist is waiting in the future for Okanagan, but the journey till now surely packs a punch. Hats off to the founders Reginald P. Clarkson, Robert Derbie, Donald M. Fraser, H.H. Stevens, and the likes for their efforts. They turned Okanagan's journey from just a narrative into a legendary tale, just like a successful Bollywood saga. Dodging curveballs and smashing boundaries, Okanagan College has evolved into a front-runner in the education scene. And all we, as spectators can say is, "Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost!"
