Let's travel back in time, all the way to 1663. That's when the first seeds of Université Laval were sown. Its foundation didn't just happen overnight! The story unfolds with the creation of the Grand Séminaire de Québec. A few years later in 1668, François de Montmorency-Laval, an instrumental figure from the House of Laval and the first Bishop of New France, further nurtured the institution by founding the Petit Séminaire.
Through its early years, the institution had a single mission - to train priests for service in New France. But after 1760, its fate took an interesting turn. The Conquest brought about a shift in the educational landscape in Canada. The British introduced liberal arts, however, French Canadians, unfortunately, did not have the liberty to pursue higher education. But thanks to Bishop Bourget of Montreal, the winds of change started blowing and Séminaire de Québec was expanded into Université Laval. Implementing the change was Louis Casault, a priest and physics teacher at the Séminaire de Québec, who travelled to Europe to seek a royal charter and learn from the best university systems.
The turning point came on December 8, 1852. Queen Victoria granted the Séminaire de Québec a royal charter, upon request by Lord Elgin, the Governor-General of the Province of Canada. This marked the birth of Université Laval, blessed with the 'rights and privileges of a university'. The church also endorsed this leap of faith as Pope Benedict XV approved the charter, allowing the institution to establish theological chairs and confer degrees.
Fast forward to 1878, the university added another feather to its cap with a second campus in Montreal. However, this campus gained independence on May 8, 1919, becoming Université de Montréal, all thanks to another writ from Pope Benedict XV. By this time, Université Laval boasted a second charter, transferring all authority to the Université Laval council in 1971.
But the success story doesn't end there. By 1925, the university had outgrown its initial location and faced a space crunch while trying to add new buildings. A shimmering opportunity arose in Sainte-Foy, a semi-rural community located west of the Quebec city centre. The university relocated there in the 1950s, with their School of Architecture finding its way back to the old building, fondly known as Le Vieux Séminaire, in 1989.
Université Laval’s governance intrigues with its bicameral structure, inspired by the provincial University of Toronto Act of 1906. With a board of governors and a faculty senate, the university creates a balance of power – spending lips service to both academic policy and financial policy. The president, appointed by the board, serves as the connecting thread between the two bodies.
The 20th century brought a need for expansion beyond the conventional fields of theology, law and medicine. With the introduction of science and social-science departments, such as forestry and household science, the university broadened its academic horizons. This period also saw the introduction of graduate training inspired by the German-American model of specialized coursework and research thesis.
Did you know that Université Laval inspired a musical piece? "Laval," a waltz composed by French-Canadian ragtime composer Wilfrid Beaudry, was dedicated to its students. In 1929, the Quebec Seminary was designated a national historic site of Canada, affirming its iconic status.
The later part of the 20th century saw the University open its department of social, political, and economic sciences in 1938. This move signaled a paradigm shift that persisted into the 1960s, emphasizing the role of higher education in social justice and economic productivity.
The initial royal charter given to Université Laval in 1852 was recognized as a National Historic Event in 1972. Reminding us of its roots, its original location at 1 Rempart Street in Quebec still functions as an educational center for Roman Catholic priests. The Université's school of architecture, which found its home in the Vieux Séminaire in 1987, adds another layer to the rich tapestry of its story. The Promotions Room, nestled within the Camille-Roy pavilion, pays homage to history while serving as an intriguing venue for various events.
In 2017, Université Laval made a bold stride towards sustainability by becoming the first Canadian university to divest its endowment from fossil fuel-related companies. This move ensured that while respecting its past, Université Laval remains committed to a healthier, sustainable future.
