Once upon a date of significance in 1857- on the tenth day of October to be precise- the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church, or the NELC as it was known, set into motion a grand plan. They yearned to equip dedicated ministers for their congregations scattered across the Upper Midwest, and so, a new seminary was birthed. While the seminary was coalescing into its final form, which would not be until 1861, eager students gathered wisdom from the famed Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. Not letting the journey take away from their pursuit of knowledge, these students were looked after by the Rev. Peter Laurentius Larsen, appointed on October 14, 1859, to guide the Norwegian scholars.
By the dawn of April 1861, the clouds of the Civil War had gathered. The seminary closed its doors, prompting the NELC to carve out a new path in education. Their strategy was to launch their very own institution in the quaint parsonage at Halfway Creek, Wisconsin. Located just a stone's throw away from La Crosse, and not too far from present-day Holmen, this new college opened its gates to learners in the fall of 1861. As the calendar marked September 1, classes sparked into life with an attendance of 16 spirited students. Soon, opportunity led the college to set down roots in Decorah, Iowa, all thanks to the NELC Pastor Ulrik Vilhelm Koren's persuasive arrangements.
A few years down the lane, in 1866, waves of discontent swept the campus. Frustrated students, chafing under stringent schedules, rules nailing them downtown, windowless lodging rooms, woodcutting, and shoe-shining chores, penned down a 'bill of rights'. Their rant reflected their demand for more freedom, which predictably, didn't sit well with the authorities. An 18-year-old student by the name of Rasmus Anderson, the torchbearer of this dissatisfaction, was expelled. His act of defiance was quickly painted as a terrible sin and a rebellion by the pastors.
Shaking off these controversies in 1905, Carlo A. Sperati, a proud 1888 alumnus of Luther, breathed new life into the Luther College Concert Band as their music director. Drawing inspiration from the wind ensemble model introduced by John Philip Sousa, the band gained international recognition under his esteemed guidance. The first of several European tours took place in 1914. Sperati bestowed his talents onto the Luther College until his death in 1945.
