The journey of the University of Regina began as the seed of a thought, in the form of Regina College in 1911. It was in Saskatchewan where the institution saw the light of day, driven by the Methodist Church of Canada's desire to establish a university in Regina. The college carved out a niche amid the quiet, tree-lined College Avenue by starting with modest enrolment of 27 students. It was not just an institution; it sprouted as an architectural marvel moulded by visionary architect James Henry Puntin, who created masterpieces like Regina Methodist College (1910), East & West Towers (1914), Ladies Residence (1914) and many more.
By 1928, Darke Hall had added to the campus’s charm. Described as an "admirable theatre", it was a realm of art few cities could rival. In an interesting turn of events, Regina College became a part of the University of Saskatchewan in 1934. This merger saw the genesis of a unique governance system blending elements from the University of Toronto Act, where a senate (faculty) supervised the academic policy, and a board of governors (citizens) wielded control over the financial policy.
Tracing its steps back to the early 20th century, the University of Saskatchewan, modelled after the American state university, veered towards extension work and applied research. It stretched the confines of professional education beyond theology, law and medicine to accompany the German-inspired American model of specialized coursework and comprehensive research. Although Regina College had been in association with the University of Saskatchewan since 1925, it actually earned full degree-granting status as its second campus only in 1959.
However, in 1934, amidst the throes of the Great Depression, the United Church found itself financially strained. The institution that had always advocated for free public education surrendered Regina College to the University of Saskatchewan. Even after this transition, Regina College and its successor envisaged a strong devotion towards the Methodist motto, "as one who serves" (Luke 22.27).
The University of Saskatchewan recognized the increasing population pressure and the role of higher education in forging social justice and economic productivity in the 1960s. Consequently, in 1961, the college was renamed 'University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus'. A decade later, in 1974, the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus achieved independence and birthed the University of Regina.
While the University has strayed from its original United Church affiliation, the Convocation furniture, a relic from one of the last downtown United Churches is a symbolic reminder of its beginnings. Furthermore, the University has broadened its horizons, offering various courses post the takeover. From the early beginnings at Regina College, the institution saw a significant upgradation in 1961 when it attained full-degree-granting status as the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan. Accompanying its growth was a robust arts and sciences program, imprinting its first milestone with a convocation in 1965.
The pivotal phase of the University’s history was marked by the establishment of a new campus on the picturesque Wascana Lake in 1966. The modernist aesthetic of the designs from renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki elicit a stark contrast to the Regina plain. Despite being home to several imposing edifices including the Dr. John Archer Library, the evolution of the campus continued throughout the end of the 20th century on a slow but unbending course.
A bold new chapter awaited the University of Regina in the 21st century. From hosting the 2005 Canada Games to opening of La Cité universitaire francophone, the first French University in Saskatchewan in 2015, the institution has achieved numerous accolades. Today, the University is driven by the goal to accommodate 25,000 students and stands as a beacon of education, culture, research, and diversity, all firmly rooted in its rich and vibrant history.
