"Once upon a time" befits a fairy tale, but strangely fits our tale about the University of New Brunswick (UNB) too. Picture it, the year was 1785, the heart of Canada was pulsing with anticipation, the education wizard, William Paine and a group of eager folks, decided, "Let's brew an education potion here!" After rummaging in their collective educational cauldron, voila, they birthed the University of New Brunswick. Official date of establishment in the books, 1800!
Now, picture the excitement! This wasn't just another university in the neighbourhood! Nope; it had the crown & glory of being the oldest English-speaking university in Canada. And the funny thing is, this old bird has a knack for 'firsts.' It was the first uni in the British empire to have an Engineering faculty, not bluffing, that happened in 1854!
To keep pace with the time, they added another feather to their hat in 1887, A Science faculty was born. Science aspirants exclaimed, "Eureka!" By 1959, these guys got an impressive Arts building, and all the Artists rejoiced, saying "It's time to wear our beret caps boys and girls!"
Picturing all the scholarly hustle bustle, right? Well, it didn't end there. UNB has an inviting global reputation and has warmly welcomed academically hungry minds, since - like forever! International students, expressly from India, have been part of their rich diverse fabric for decades now.
Would you believe, Indians have made their mark here from as early as the late 1960s or 1970s? Yes, from engineering marvels to science whizz-kids, UNB's seen and celebrated it. Talk about a minute melting pot of cultures!
No kidding, between 1960 -1985, UNB's growth was so phenomenal, it's often referred to as "the dynamic years"; during these, it expanded faster than a teenager's lingo! Roaring 70s saw the university acquiring a Law school. On a lighter note, who would have thought, it would use its Law facility to school Ross Geller in "Friends."
Our tour through UNB's history wouldn't wrap up without a mention of the Computer Science Centre, and it would be a crime not to recognize Bliss Carman, UNB's literary heritage and its poet-laureate's contribution to its Arts and Humanities.
Closing this magical history book with the 2000s, a.k.a the 'innovation era', as I like to call it. UNB decided to pioneer again – this time with Canada's first research chair in technology management & entrepreneurship. Now, some may say, "Who gives a hoot about that?" Well, Indian techies and budding entrepreneurs might say, "We sure do!"
Every brick in the wall of UNB bespeaks a tale of timeless tradition and innovation. For any Indian student setting foot in there, it isn't merely a walk into a university, but a journey into an epic tale of a place that’s always been forging ahead since 1800, eh?
