History University of Saskatchewan

Indeed, the journey of University of Saskatchewan is nothing short of an exciting story, packed full of ambitious plans, political nuances, and the spirit of contribution to society, that weaves its way from 1907 to the present. Now, let's dive into the fascinating pages of this tale.

Imagine the time, when Saskatchewan was still young as a province, and its people full of passionate dreams. The dream of having a place for higher learning for the young minds of this lively province began to take shape on a chilly day of March 19, 1907. The diligent citizens of this burgeoning province received a beacon of joy, as the provincial charter granted the University of Saskatchewan its birthright. This institution was a public entity, yet possessed a unique flair of independence.

The echoes of the University of Toronto Act of 1906 served as an inspiration, leading to a bicameral university governance system. This new framework comprised of a board of governors and a senate, with the former responsible for financial policies and the latter looking after the academic policies. These two bodies were amalgamated by a president who was appointed by the board, serving as a crucial bridge.

Now, let's travel in time to 1909. Amid heated debates and lobbying from multiple locations, Saskatoon emerged as the winner for our energetic university on April 7th. The first bricks of this vibrant institution welcomed passionate students on October 12, 1912, under the visionary leadership of the first president, Walter Charles Murray.

Our roller coaster ride took a passionate turn when the dream of University of Saskatchewan started to expand its academic horizons in early 20th century. The concept of graduate training was birthed, inspired by the German-influenced American model. The choice to train young minds was no longer limited to traditional fields like law, theology, and medicine.

Let's take a glimpse at 1927, when the graceful Memorial Gates manifested in honour of university students and faculty who courageously served during World War I. With the bravery of 342 students, faculty, and staff, the university added a proud feather to its hat during the war. On a side note, our university crossed paths with the Canadian Heraldic Authority on February 15, 2001, marking another milestone in its journey.

Now, envision a lively heart on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, right across Saskatoon's city centre. That's indeed where our University vibrantly thrived! The initial few structures, designed by David Robertson Brown, displayed a gripping fascination towards the Collegiate Gothic style. The defining cornerstone was laid by none other than the Prime Minister of Canada, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, on July 29, 1910. The College Building took its first breath on May 1, 1913, and was deemed a National Historic Site of Canada by 2001.

Fast-forwarding to the 1960s, the university education policy underwent a significant transformation due to raging population pressure and an unshaken belief in education's role in fostering social equity and economic progress. The one-university policy in the west changed dramatically with the existing colleges of the provincial universities gaining their autonomy. Also, correspondences courses were introduced in 1929.

At the peak of our narrative, let's traverse through the flourishing 1990s when the U of S unveiled a massive revitalisation program. This move entailed some fresh capital projects. They also ventured into residential development while simultaneously safeguarding the "green belt" cherished by the surrounding neighbourhoods. This dedication to sustainable development continues to be a hallmark of this eminent institution's journey.

So, now that we have journeyed through this captivating tale, we see the University of Saskatchewan as a steadfast pillar of higher education, its growth intertwined with that of the province, constantly adapting, evolving, and breaking new grounds. Brimming with a rich history, a commitment to academic excellence, and a sense of community, it awaits to welcome the avid learners and global cit
