Imagine a small independent institute established in 1836. This embryonic school, founded by Rev. Lucius Doolittle and Edward Chapman, flourished to become what we know today as Bishop's University. The journey wasn't short of difficulties but the resilience and determination to provide liberal arts education stood unwavering.
On December 9, 1843, the university became known as Bishop's College, envisioned by none other than The Lord Bishop of Québec The Rt. Rev. Dr. George Jehoshaphat Mountain. This bold step was taken in Lennoxville, Quebec, primarily for Church of England members. A testament of Bishop Mountain's foresight, the college expanded to become a university by 1853.
Fast forward to 1845, a crucial year for our university. Welcoming a new first principal, the Reverend Jasper Hume Nicolls, hailing from Queen's College, Oxford, the university set a new course. By 1853, Reverend Nicolls and Bishop Mountain were successfully able to secure the Royal Charter that transformed the college into a full-fledged university. Reverend Nicolls led the university through numerous challenges for the next 32 years.
Leaping ahead to 1871, Bishop's expanded with the inception of a faculty of medicine – the Bishop's Medical Faculty, located in Montreal. The faculty merged with McGill University in 1905. Continuing its journey, Bishops opened the Faculty of Law in Sherbrooke in 1880. Unfortunately, it only operated for eight years and had only fifteen graduates to its credit.
In 1922, Bishop's College School found a new home on Moulton Hill after surviving a devastating fire in 1891. It wasn't a full farewell though, as many connections with the old campus remained. The university was under the Church of England's control until 1947. From then on, an appointed group of trustees has managed the business affairs while an academic senate handles academic matters. This efficient management system has roots in the 1906 provincial University of Toronto Act.
The year 1993 marked a milestone for Bishop's as it celebrated its Sesquicentennial Convocation in the Centennial Theatre. Canada's Governor General Ray Hnatyshyn presented the university's Coat of Arms and Flag, a significant honour. However, fast forward to 2007 and Bishop’s faced a tough moment; enrollment had declined by 14 percent and campus morale was low after a lengthy staff strike and faculty lock-out. The university faced nerve-wrenching financial challenges, spurring rumours of closure. But we bounced back stronger than ever by 2010, thanks to focused leadership and aggressive student recruitment strategies.
Troubles resurfaced again in 2023 when Quebec's language officials announced that students from outside Quebec studying in the province would face double the tuition fee beginning in fall 2024. Predicting a potential 30% drop in student intake, Sébastien Lebel-Grenier, Bishop's Principal and Vice-Chancellor, warned of an existential threat to the institution. Nevertheless, the clouds of worry dissipated when Quebec’s Premier, Francois Legault, announced an exemption for Bishop’s from the proposed tuition hikes for out-of-province students on November 24, 2023. Now, that's proof that you don't just survive through adversities, you thrive despite them, just like Bishop's University. Everyone has a story to tell, and this, my dear readers, is ours.
