Back in 1964, a significant event unfolded in the history of Newfoundland's education. The then Premier, Joey Smallwood, unveiled the College of Fisheries, Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics. Housed in the erstwhile Parade St. Campus that was a part of Memorial University College (which later evolved into Memorial University of Newfoundland), the new addition was significantly aimed towards promoting marine studies.
This new college was locally recognized as the "Fisheries College." It was a specialized institution that breathed a new life into the marine and fisheries study streams. However, the buzzing activity at the Parade St campus soon outgrew its capacity and necessitated a change. As a result, in 1985, the College relocated to a sprawling establishment on Ridge Road.
While the move to Ridge Road came with a breath of fresh air, it was also the start of a new chapter in the College's journey. As a symbol of its growing prominence and wider horizons, the institute was given a new identity. It was aptly renamed as the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology.
