In the buzz year of 1971, a thrilling idea was born, celebrating the inception of St. Stephen's University. And so, the official launch unfurled itself on July 15, 1975, with six bright-eyed students and a devoted team of faculty and staff. Their educational journey sprouted, taking shelter in charmingly rented spaces at Union Street Baptist Church and Todd Mansion in St. Stephen. They found home in a cosy residence called the Elm Lodge.
Giving a year to settle in, SSU made a bold move in 1976 by acquiring an old gem, the Park Hotel at 8 Main Street. This grand old structure took a new breath by transforming into Park Hall, the heart of SSU's campus. After an intense couple of pioneering years, SSU assembled its first-ever Board of Governors in 1978, lending stability to the soaring university.
The winds of change blew in 1987-88, challenging SSU with a drastic dip in enrolment numbers, but this did not deter the university. They decided to plow through, fighting odds in favour of preserving the university by running an extended student recruitment campaign that effectively saved the institution.
An exciting flash point in SSU's journey came in 1988. Adding a dash of adventure to academia, SSU incorporated travel-study programs. Europe and Asia soon became learning grounds for students of SSU, with a special focus on Scotland and Northern Ireland. Your study-abroad dreams were now just a decision away at SSU!
Fast forward to 1995, SSU decided to diversify, launching a pilot project for Theology and Culture program under Dr. Peter Fitch's leadership. It marked SSU's entry into graduate studies. By 1998, with Dr. Gregg Finley as the Dean of Arts, SSU was ready to sprinkle more wisdom, receiving the province's charter to grant bachelor's and master's degrees in liberal arts and humanities.
With the baton handed over to Bob Cheatley, the second president of SSU in 2003, new directions were sought. In 2009, they extended their academic horizon yet again by introducing undergrad majors in psychology and international studies. A significant milestone was set in 2017 with SSU's launch of the Institute for Religion, Peace, and Justice, named after peace advocate and author Jim Forest.
In 2019, the reins of the Dean for Theology & Culture were in the capable hands of Dr. Bradley Jersak. That year also saw the introduction of the impressive Master of Arts in Theology & Culture, paralleling the Master of Ministry program. Yet again, in 2020, the university welcomed new leaders, Dr. Margaret Anne Smith and Steve Robinson, as they were appointed as co-presidents.
In a zest to redefine & reshape learning adapted to the evolving needs of students, Dr. Joe McGinn assumed presidency in 2022. But as fate had it, witnessing a considerable decline in enrolment, the leaders decided to suspend all undergraduate programs in January 2023. This, however, was looked at as an opportunity to concentrate more on the development and delivery of their well-loved graduate studies programs. With Dr. Bradley Jersak in the front line, alongside Dr. Andrew Phillip Klager, a fresh era awaited SSU. Now, aren’t you excited about where your future academic voyage at SSU could take you?
