Many many moons ago, in the year of 1957, a beautiful fine day saw the birth of the University of Waterloo in Canada. That's right, you heard me, 1957! And they didn't waste any time, I'll tell you that. Rising like a phoenix from the ashes of the tired old post-war years, Waterloo was ready to take the world by storm. In the beginning, it spread its wings with a bunch of 76 bright-eyed and bushy-tailed students ready for the big league, and five dapper gents - Gerry Hagey, Ira G. Needles, and Rev. Cornelius Siegfried to name a few, leading the pack.
Waterloo had its sights set sky-high from day one. Its unique co-op program was a trailblazer, the first of its wild kind in Canada. Imagine, not only burrowing your head in books but also tapping into real-world experience! Gaining practical skills while studying. Magic isn't it? Gathering a fine coat of workplace dust before the graduation gown, that's Waterloo's signature style!
By the 1960s, they already had the Mathematics faculty up and running, the first stand-alone faculty in North America. Now, if we're talking about Math, we can't leave behind the Computer Science gang. Waterloo, never one to miss a beat or a byte, became the first Canadian university offering a full-fledged undergraduate program in Computer Science in the early '60s. Nerds of the world, rejoice!
Remember the co-op program we spoke of? Hold onto your hats because, by 1975, they had over a whopping 5,000 tributes...ahem..students braving the co-op circuit, largest in the world! I tell ya, these fellas don't do anything in halves.
Let's jump to the next exciting chapter in Waterloo's evolution. Fast forward to the glittering '90s, Waterloo is cranking up the heat. With the unveiling of the School of Architecture, and later, the School of Pharmacy, and boy oh boy, wasn't it a jolly sight!
Now, before we wave off the '90s, we got one more gem to reveal! Drumroll please - 1997 and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics came to life! Thanks to our beloved BlackBerry creator, Mike Lazaridis. Talk about connecting dots, or should I say physics' particles?
The new millennium turned even more brilliant for our dear Waterloo. In 2001, they proudly launched Canada's first Software Engineering Program. And added another feather to their hat or rather department to their forte in 2002, with the School of Optometry. Blink once if you caught that!
It's 2005, and Waterloo is handing out diplomas like hotcakes. Bursting at the seams with over 22,000 full-time jacks of all trades and masters of their chosen disciplines, ready to conquer the world. It's a sight to behold!
And that, my dear friends, that brings us to now, the University of Waterloo - a shining beacon, a marquee institution. Offering a wide array of courses. Supporting and shaping young curious minds from all over the globe, including just like you, dudes and dudettes from India. Home away from home, I say!
