In the serene town of Woodstock, nestled within New Brunswick, Canada, something extraordinary was taking shape in October 1945. A collaboration between passionate members of the Alliance of the Reformed Baptist Church of Canada gave birth to an educational institution they christened as the Holiness Bible Institute. Their ambition? To offer rigorous training and facilitate the growth of ministers dedicated to serving the Atlantic region's Reformed Baptist Church.
By 1947, the school had attracted attention far and wide, beckoning a change. Recognizing the need to grow, it spread its wings and migrated to the charming seaside town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Embracing its new locale, it proudly took on a new name as well - Bethany Bible College.
Not one to rest on its laurels, Bethany saw another transition just under two decades later in 1965. The university returned home to New Brunswick, this time making its nest in Sussex. But this move was more than geographical; it marked the beginning of a spiritual transformation as well. July 1966 saw the Alliance of the Reformed Baptist Church of Canada merging hearts with the Wesleyan Methodist Church. More unity was on horizon when, by June of 1968, the two churches combined with the Pilgrim Holiness Church to form what we now fondly call The Wesleyan Church.
The ensuing years were all about pushing academic boundaries. When the calender turned a fresh leaf with May 1970, the General Board of Administration of The Wesleyan Church showered Bethany with the power to award the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Religion. This four-year comprehensive program quickly became the cornerstone for aspiring, full-time ministers.
In 1983, another milestone was reached when Bethany won the privilege to grant church-related degrees. This was made possible thanks to legislation passed by the proactive Province of New Brunswick. Recognizing Bethany's growing brilliance, the Association for Biblical Higher Education accredited it in 1987, a status that was triumphantly reconfirmed ten years later, in 1997.
Fast forward to July 1, 2015 – a momentous day when Dr. Stephen J. Lennox dawned the mantle of Kingswood University's 12th president. The leadership torch has been passed on from one worthy hand to another to ensure Kingswood never loses its flame.
