Riding back in history, our tale begins in the year 1968, if you can believe it, way before smartphones, social media, and even before the Internet in the far-off region of Quebec, Canada. Now, who had the bravura idea of starting a university back then, you must be wondering. The credit goes to the Government of Quebec, under the relentless leadership of Jean-Jacques Bertrand, a man with the vision to overhaul the province’s higher education system - quite the visionary, right!
Now, the Université du Québec got kicked off with a pretty unique and simple mission - to democratize access to high-quality education in the province. Unlike most universities that thrive in big urban cities, this one decided to go all out for the small towns and less central areas, giving a chance to folks who wouldn't usually have a shot at higher education. So, the University of Quebec went ahead and dusted off the old rules - creating new ones that allowed people from all cities, all backgrounds, and all ages to have a whirl at higher education.
Picture this, as the years rolled by, our university branched out faster than a speedy spread of a viral TikTok video. By 1972, it had spread its academic wings to other regions, establishing 10 institutions in different parts of Quebec. Some of these names on the table were École de technologie supérieure (ETS), École nationale d'administration publique (ENAP), and Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) eclipsing everybody's expectations. Mind you, these institutions aren't just a run-of-the-mill kind, they are known by the world for their academic, research, and innovation prowess.
Now, coming to you, my lovely Indian folks. Yes, our university lays out a red carpet for international folks too. From bustling Indian cities to the hushed quiet of Quebec, many Indian students bring their dreams, ambitions, and fiery curries to our campus. The University of Notre-Dame-du-Quebec has graduated top-notch professionals, crème-de-la-crème scientists, and people who're rough and tough enough to change the world.
Who'd have thought the 1960's brainchild would grow to open arms to over 87,000 students every year? And that with nearly 7,000 hardworking, Einstein-minded professors to throw light on the mysteries of the world? With more than 500 programs and research centres shaping the future of the world, our University proves year after year that it's a leader, and it means business.
So, hats off to Bertrand's far-sightedness and stubbornness to reach out to every citizen of Quebec. His dream, back in 1968, walking the walk with cassettes and bell-bottom pants, was to open up the ivory towers of academia to everyone. Now in 2021, with the Internet and your mom's video calls, the University does it with 91% of its student population being Quebec citizens. And thanks to the University's flexible entry requirements, academic opportunities are no longer a leisure of a privileged few.
So, as the sun sets, my dear Indian pals, remember - the University of Quebec was not just another educational institution. It rose from the sixties, breaking down barriers and taking along everyone who dared to dream, regardless of where they came from or what their backstory was. Remember, our arms are always open for those with the hunger for knowledge and the desire to make a difference.
Cherry on the top? The University of Quebec ain't done yet. It’s on a steady path forging its reputation as a hub for innovation, cultural diversity, and inclusivity. The brimming pot of multinational students, groundbreaking research, and a mission as strong as the Canadian moose - proves that the University of Quebec is no ordinary destination, but an extraordinary life-changing journey. So, when are you packing your bags to join us?
