History George Brown College

Back in the day, in 1967, a chap by the name of George Brown decided to create an institute of learning in the heart of Toronto, Canada. Ok, so maybe it wasn't George Brown himself, after all, he was the Father of Confederation in Canada in the mid-1800s! A bloke like him couldn't exactly found a college more than a century later, right? But, his vision and legacy sparked the creation of the educational haven that is George Brown College.

It all started with 2000 students keen to stuff knowledge in their noggins. By the way, this was, back in a time when "hippie" was a new term and the Beatles still played together! Anyways, the college kept folks on their toes with the very first courses in Dental Health, a calling card of the college even today. By the way, Indian parents, you know how we love when our kids go into health fields!

A few years down the line, in '75, the college elbows its way into an impressive art and design scene by acquiring the Ontario College of Art and Design. Talk about a rainbow move! Now it’s not just about molars and canines, but also about shapes and silhouettes.

That same 1975, George Brown made another headline by opening the first-ever Student Residence. Among studying and scuttling between classes, students now had a cozy corner to hit the hay. To all our Indian kids already dreaming of late-night instant Maggi noodles and Bollywood movie marathons in their dorms at George Brown, yes, they ranked it first!

Fast forward to the 1990’s - launching Canadian film programs, a Titan move, after all. They put stuff on the big screen... bada bing bada boom! "Filmi" dreams anyone?

The turn of the millennium was a major year for the college. By the numbers, student enrollment? Brace yourselves - 60,000 full-time students! Hundreds of burgeoning scholars from the homeland of samosas and Bollywood included, mind you.

In 2004 George Brown decided to address the elephant in the room – we all can use a little bit of heart-to-heart. Cue in meaningful convos on mental wellness, setting off initiatives that many other institutions followed suit – talk about being a groundbreaker!

Come 2012 and they’re onto cooking up a storm. No, not just Methi Parathas and Tandoori snacks but Culinary Arts, Hospitality, and Tourism courses too. Makes sense, doesn’t it though? What’s studying without a bit of a food angle?

Fast forward to now and it's one of Canada's largest and most diversified colleges. The count says - 15,000 international students in 2019! Now isn’t that a basket full of ethnic and cultural diversity!

George Brown College’s journey from a humble beginning in 1967 to a renowned institution today is like a dreamy dose of dessert after a hefty meal. If you're sitting somewhere in India feeling a million miles away, know that this college is ready to welcome your dreams, ideas+a whole lot of your Indian-ness as a part of its rich, engaging history. So, get packed and wing your way to George Brown. As the Euro boys say it - “it’s the final countdown!".
