Triggered by a vital resolution drafted on 4th April 1876, the doors of Ontario's first school of arts opened wide on 30th October 1876. It was our government that believed in this lofty vision, awarding an $1,000 grant, and made 14 students' artistic dreams come true within the walls of 14 King Street West.
Into the history books goes Thomas Mower Martin as the inaugural director leading the institute until 1879. With an illustrious faculty that-notably-included Robert Harris as well as William Cruikshank, the institution also benefited from Cruikshank's expert guidance as president from 1884 to 1886. Just six years later, in 1882, our provincial department of education claimed control, moving the institution into the Toronto Normal School building. By 1886, they had changed addresses again, to Queen and Yonge Street, and names, now known as the Toronto Art School.
Then, in 1890, guess who’s back! Yes, the Ontario Society of Artists, resuming its involvement, packed the institution's bags and moved it to 173 King Street West. Here they enjoyed the view from the upper levels of the Princess Theatre building, while adding a new chapter to the school's story, rechristening it as the Central Ontario School of Art and Industrial Design. Just a couple of decades later, in 1910, a move was in order again due to the impending demolition of the Princess Theatre.
1912, what a historic year! The provincial charter was handed over, with the institute incorporating as the Ontario College of Art (OCA).
