History Toronto Metropolitan University

Oftentimes, the foundation of an institution emerges from a need arising in society, and this was precisely the case with the Toronto Metropolitan University. Born as a testament to Howard Hillen Kerr's vision during the Second World War, the University was envisioned not just as another academic institution, but as a bridge between high school and traditional universities.

Kerr, along with his companions from the Toronto Board of Education, recognized a gap in Canadian education. Veterans returning from the war were in dire need of specialized training for career re-establishment. Thus, borne of this vision in 1943, Kerr aimed to establish a Canadian version of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), providing specialized vocational training for veterans. It was a rather ambitious and novel goal.

With his tenacity and relentless efforts, Kerr gave birth to the Vocational Education Act, thus paving the way for numerous vocational schools and technological institutes across Ontario. Despite ambitious plans, the onset of the Cold War necessitated delaying the establishment of multiple institutes. Fortunately, by 1948, with diminished threats of war, the Ryerson Institute of Technology finally swung its doors open.

Established on the grounds of the historical Toronto Normal School, founded in 1847 by Egerton Ryerson, the newly christened school was brimming with proud beginnings. Egerton himself played a significant role in fostering education in Canada West, and the grounds were rich with academic tributes, including the Royal Ontario Museum and the OCAD University. Starting with 250 diligent students, the institute primarily offered two-year vocational and training programs eventually growing into three-year diplomas by the early 1950s.

But as we all know, evolution is the core of progress. Expanding rapidly, the burgeoning student population soon outgrew the original institute's building. Thus, in 1958, work began on the first building - Kerr Hall - exclusively dedicated to the institute. By 1963, several new buildings dawned around the courtyard, as the institute transformed from a robust vocational school to a comprehensive educational hub.

Moreover, in 1964, it transformed officially into Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, expanding its career canopied arms to embrace scholarly research. This journey of metamorphosis continued until 1993 when it achieved full polytechnic university status. By 2002, it decided to drop the 'polytechnic' reference, proudly identifying simply as Ryerson University.

However, the road to progress often ushers in difficult debates. Post the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's report in 2015, voices grew louder for renaming the university due to Egerton Ryerson's association with the Canadian Indian residential school system. This ignited a critical evaluation by the university to address those concerns.

Fueled further by the unfortunate discovery of possible unmarked graves at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in 2021, the pressure for a name change intensified. To honour this call for change, the university accepted the recommendations of an internal task force, suggesting to rename the university. On April 26, 2022, the announcement was made, the Ryerson University was to be renamed as the Toronto Metropolitan University, a title formalized into its governing legislation in December 2022.

The history of Toronto Metropolitan University is a testament to the audacious vision of its founders, a celebration of its evolution and a beacon of change in response to societal need. It's more than just an educational institute; it's a living, evolving entity reflecting the journey of progress and transformation.
