In the vibrant city of Toronto, back in 1894, a group of intellectual minds and passionate faith leaders embarked on an educational venture. With Elmore Harris, the pastor of Walmer Road Baptist Church at its helm as the first president, the Toronto Bible Training School emerged. The first principal, William Boyd Stewart, was none other than the former pastor of Bond Street Baptist Church. For four initial years, the teaching arenas were the sanctified premises of Walmer Road Church, culminating in a memorable relocation.
In the year 1898, fueled by the significant backing of Harris family's munificence, they settled into the majestic Gothic Revival building at 110 College Street. Interestingly, this spot, leased from the University of Toronto, would later transform into the current site of the University of Toronto's Banting and Best Department of Medical Research Building post-1928.
Eighteen years later, in 1912, the school underwent another development, with its name modified to Toronto Bible College (TBC). This transformative period bore witness to a change in location in 1928, with the move to 16 Spadina Road, which is now the Native Canadian Centre. TBC thus became North America's third and Canada's first-ever permanent Bible school. The visionary founders conceived this institution as a breeding ground for Sunday School teachers, faithful missionaries, and pastors’ assistants.
Throughout the 1940s, the college flourished under the presidency of John McNicol. His ethos established a critical balance, circumventing both ultra-fundamentalism and modernism. This stance endeared TBC to evangelicals across mainline denominations. TBC's graduation ceremonies were indeed grand Toronto affairs that drew massive crowds.
Fast forward to 1968, Toronto Bible College amalgamated with the London College of Bible and Missions, forming the Ontario Bible College. This merger brought a fresh influx of students from numerous evangelical denominations, such as the Mennonite Brethren, the Brethren, and the Associated Gospel Churches. By 1976, OBC had found a new home at Willowdale in a former Jesuit seminary, an architectural marvel designed by Peter Dickinson.
Brimming with aspirations, the institution opened the Ontario Theological Seminary in the same year. This journey culminated in them obtaining degree-granting permission by the Ontario Government in 1986, and three years later, they achieved full accreditation by the Association of Theological Schools.
However, the tide turned in 1995 when the institution faced insolvency, filing a proposal to creditors. But it sprang back under the dynamic leadership of President Brian Stiller, CFO Winston Ling, and a reshuffled board. In 1998, the rejuvenated school adopted a new identity — Tyndale College and Seminary, an homage to the 16th-century Reformation theologian, William Tyndale.
The new millennium was filled with more milestone moments for Tyndale. It was now recognized as Tyndale University College and Seminary by the Ontario Legislature in 2003. This designation allowed for the offering of Bachelor of Arts degree in a range of fields, including religion, theology, divinity, humanities, social sciences, and business. By 2007, it had procured ministerial consent to the offer a Bachelor of Education program as well.
After obtaining a neighboring institution, St. Joseph's Morrow Park, in 2006, all departments moved there in Spring 2015. Today, Tyndale Seminary boasts being the largest accredited seminary in Canada and has consistently received high rankings in measures of student satisfaction. Reflecting its growth and evolution, the institution, in January 2020, dropped "& College" from its title, transitioning to Tyndale University, an exciting chapter in its long and vibrant history.
