Fairleigh Dickinson University, an esteemed instance of academic brilliance, was once just a dream nursed by the entrepreneurial tag team of Peter Sammartino and Sylvia Sammartino. In 1942, when the world was knee-deep in the dark clouds of war, our heroic duo dared to dream of brighter days, full of knowledge and learning opportunities.
They decided on a grand leap, leaving their snug security for a challenging adventure. When most of us envision our retirements, it's with hot cups of Masala chai and undisrupted weekend snoozes. But, the Sammartinos? They wanted a university in their retirement, filled with youthful energy and great ideas. Here's where the real plot twist takes place.
Marrying the core principles of higher learning with entrepreneurship, they launched New Jersey's first two-year institution of higher learning on Rutherford and Teaneck campuses in 1948. Not your run-of-the-mill 'shaandaar' Real Estate purchase, eh? By the way, located near New York City, these campuses, the heart and soul of FDU, might soon be the daily playground for our young Indian talents dreaming of an incredible international education.
But they didn't stop there. Accumulating accolades like samosas accumulate aloo, FDU catapulted itself to become the first American university to own and operate an international campus in 1958. Our restless Sammartinos had blissfully ignored the renowned Indian 'Log kya kahenge?' (What will people say?) syndrome, and they hit the bullseye!
Fast forwarding a bit, in 1993, FDU caught the 'globalization virus' (but in a good way), starting their educational partnerships in Israel, UK, and Canada. You'd think they might pause for breath or, you know, a nap. But nope, in no time they were stepping gingerly onto the virtual path inaugurating Web Campus in 1998. Who'd have thunk?
Time and tide wait for no one, and hence in 2007, FDU's Vancouver Campus came into existence, becoming a melting pot for learners hailing from more than 70 countries! Quite a crowd, ain’t it? It's like holding a global 'mela' without the spicy 'pani puris', but with an immense amount of knowledge to devour.
Wait for the cherry on top here, folks. In recent years FDU is among the few institutions to have been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Health for students’ research opportunities! It’s like being chosen for the winning cricket team by none other than cricket legend, Virat Kohli himself!
In the 21st century, FDU has become an important lighthouse on the world’s academic shoreline attracting thousands of international students annually. And once they enrol, these students are greeted with the same pioneering spirit and audacious dream that led the Sammartinos to launch this academic hangar years ago.
As we rightfully celebrate the origin and success of Fairleigh Dickinson University, we should also step back and applaud Peter and Sylvia Sammartinos' audacity, vision, and commitment to education. For it is their tenacious spirit that has shaped FDU's robust academic legacy.
