The Art Institute of Vancouver

The Art Institute of Vancouver (AIV) began its illustrious journey in 1979, initially under the name of Buttertree sound school. Enriching its academic scope significantly, it joined The Art Institute in 2002 and incorporated the International Canadian Institute of Culinary and Hospitality in its curriculum from 2003. Today, AIV holds a superior position in the academic fields of design, fashion, media, and culinary arts in North America. Its global network is spread across two countries - USA and Canada - with about 45 branches that annually accommodate over 125,000 international students.

Further expanding its academic influences, AIV joined the prestigious global network of LCI Education in 2017, making it a part of an international family comprising 22 higher education institutions located in various cities across five continents. As a testament to its academic excellence, Princeton University's ranking for the last four years has consistently included AIV in the top 10 North American institutions for Game Design, validating it as the juggernaut in Canada for the respective field.

From a student's perspective, AIV promotes an expansive panorama of field-specific educational programs. Ranging from animation and digital cinema to event organizing, programming, and web design, these programs initiated in 2004 pave the way for comprehensive learning under the supervision of industry professionals. The essence of education at AIV rests in equipping students with pivotal industry knowledge and sparking innovation under expert guidance.

Stepping out of the AIV, students enter the professional world well-prepared. This is evident as AIV graduates have found opportunities in renowned companies such as MTV, Disney, Microsoft, Yahoo, Time Warner, Marriott, Ford, and Fox Interference among others. The valuable training at AIV provides students with a rock-solid groundwork, propelling their career to great heights and equips them with the expertise necessary to leave a distinct impression on the sectors they choose to serve.

History The Art Institute of Vancouver

Okay, here we go. The Art Institute of Vancouver didn't just spring up out of the ground one fine day. No, sir! It all kicked off back in '76, not 1876, I speak of 1976! It was a mega-year, with chatterboxes calling it the "Centennial Bell" year, named by the patriots to honour the 100th birthday of America’s northern neighbor – that’s right, Canada.

So, as the summer of ‘76 was making waves, a group of art whiz kids decided it was high time Vancouver got its own art institute - nothing grand as Hogwarts, but a humble artistic sanctuary. Fast forward a few dash of seconds, bang! The Center for Digital Imaging and Sound (CDIS) was placed on the map.

CDIS? Sounds a little nerdy right? Well, let’s keep our ears on the ground. Making hay while the sun shines, they began spreading their tentacles, incorporating more courses and tech toys like they just discovered a gold mine. They suddenly shot to stardom, becoming a praiseworthy institute for learning multimedia and digital arts in Vancouver.

Catch this, in 2002, they decided “You know what, CDIS sounds way too serious! Let’s jazz it up a bit!" Thus, the name took a 360 degree spin from The Center for Digital Imaging and Sound to the Art Institute of Vancouver. Now that's a real crowd-pleaser right there!

But did they stop there? No siree! In 2003, they walked the red carpet, bagging the ritualistic accreditation from the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA) of British Columbia. A year later, in 2004, they notched up, offering bachelor's degrees, leaping beyond their dwarfish stature.

In 2008, they became part of an international fray, joining the family with The Art Institutes’ system in North America, spreading their wings, allowing more international students to experience their magic.

The institute took it up a notch in 2009 when they partnered with the Restaurant and Chef's Association of British Columbia (RCA of BC) to offer culinary programs. Can you smell what the institute is cooking?

Cut to 2013; they pulled off a feat, receiving the acclaimed Gold LEED certification for their sustainable campus. After all, "Going Green" was the new orange back then!

So now you're probably thinking, "Okay, has the story ended?" Well not quite yet, dear reader. In 2016, the institute decided it was time for a makeover. So, they painted their front door red and moved into a new campus in Renfrew Street. A new home, same old spirit.

In a nutshell, The Art Institute of Vancouver didn't have it easy, but thanks to the few daring early birds of 1976, it has proven to be a real boondoggle for the art worshippers around the globe. 15 years ago or 150 years into the future, the Art Institute of Vancouver's story will be remembered as one of triumph and inspiration. This ain't your ordinary history class folks, it's the making of an institution!
