In the heart of Victoria, on a lush 3-hectare plot, a significant seed was sown in the year 1914. Picture this place over a century ago – that's when the famed Young Building emerged as Victoria's premier Normal School on belonging to none other than the legendary Hudson's Bay Company. Just a little over 270 wide-eyed students began their journey here, inaugurating a legacy of learning that lasts till today.
Picture a shift in our narrative to the era of the Second World War. The Young Building transitioned from an abode of education to a haven of healing, transforming into a military hospital. Transitions define our history, don't they? When the smoke of war cleared in 1946, the same building assumed its educational prowess again, hosting both the Normal School and Victoria College, an unique academic partnership that persisted until 1956.
The tale of transformation didn't end there. Leap forward to the fateful year of 1967, when our beloved institutes - the Normal School and Victoria College - relocated to their new home, the Gordon Head Campus of the University of Victoria. Let's pause here and appreciate a lesser-known gem called the Institute of Adult Studies. Established by the Greater Victoria School Board, this center started operating from what we now know as the Ewing Building. A pioneer in its field, it was the first Canadian center to offer daylight classes for adults aspiring for high school graduation.
By the time the clock struck 1970, the local pulse had picked up on the need for a community college. What happened next was a public endorsement. On October 9, Victoria voted with an overwhelming "yes" to the establishment of a college. A plan was set in motion, paving the way for the birth of "Juan de Fuca" College. Our provincial authorities gave their official nod to the plan on October 27, 1970, marking an important milestone in our journey.
The year 1971 brought with it another significant transformation. The name "Camosun" (pronounced Cam-Ō-sun) was proposed, and unanimously accepted. Interestingly, "Camosun" was an early name for Victoria. It stems from the native Lekwungen (Songhees) language, referring to an area where different waters come together and are transformed. Fast forward to September 1971, the final steps towards the realization of a college were taken. Camosun (at Lansdowne campus) and the BC Vocational School (at Interurban campus) merged to form B.C.'s ninth community college.
Let's take a moment to relish the jubilation of 2021 when we celebrated our golden anniversary – A significant 50-year milestone! To commemorate this feat, we commissioned an exquisite anniversary logo from alumnus and Indigenous artist Dylan Thomas, which beautifully captured the story of Camossung.
A quick trivia here for those unaware of our brand journey. The trademark of 'Camosun College' was filed on 22nd February 2008 with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office Canadian Trade-marks database.
As the autumn of 1971 breezed in, the college welcomed its first batch of students. It started as a two-year institution, providing university transfer, vocational, and upgrading courses to the locals of Southern Vancouver Island. Now, in the academic year 2022/23, we are proud to operate with around 1,400 dedicated employees and a substantial budget of $147.4 million.
