History University of Victoria

Believe it or not, the University of Victoria was actually the first post-secondary institution in British Columbia, tracing its roots back to 1903 when it was originally established as Victoria College. It was initially associated with McGill University, a relationship that lasted from 1903 to 1915. During this period, Victoria College operated alongside Victoria High School offering arts and sciences courses. The two institutions even shared the same leadership with E.B. Paul and S.J. Willis serving as the Principal from 1903 to 1908 and 1908 to 1915 respectively.

Interests shifted, however, in 1915 when the University of British Columbia was established, compelling Victoria College to suspend its operations. But the college couldn’t be kept down for long. In the face of mounting local demands, it made a comeback in 1920 and chose to associate with the University of British Columbia. The rebirth of Victoria College saw its complete separation from Victoria High School and a relocation to Craigdarroch Castle in 1921.

Under the leadership of E.B. Paul and P.H. Elliott, the next two decades saw Victoria College consistently providing first and second-year arts and sciences courses. It was during this time that renowned author Pierre Berton served as the principal cartoonist for the student newsletter, "The Microscope." Despite all these developments, the college couldn't attract more than 250 students until 1945, when the return of 128 servicemen from World War II led to a significant increase in enrollment.

Fast forward to the period between 1945 and 1963, Victoria College, under the leadership of J.M. Ewing and W.H. Hickman, underwent a dramatic transformation from a two-year college into a University. The institution had been under the control of the Victoria College Council, a representative of the University of British Columbia, the Greater Victoria School Board and the provincial Department of Education. A major shift occurred in 1946 when the college was forced to move due to post-war enrollment from Craigdarroch to the Lansdowne campus of the Provincial Normal School, which joined Victoria College in 1956 as its Faculty of Education.

Later in this transitional period, the college acquired a magnificent 284-acre campus at Gordon Head. It wasn't until 1961, however, that the college, still affiliated with UBC, awarded its first bachelor's degrees. The University of Victoria, as we know it today, gained full autonomy on July 1, 1963 through a charter, which vested administrative authority in a chancellor, a board of governors, and a president. The University’s official coat of arms and academic regalia highlight its historic affiliations, while its motto reflects its commitment to enlightenment and wisdom.

In 1992, the University of Victoria took significant steps to improve its academic environment by establishing the committee to "Make the Department More Supportive to Women". Headed by Dr. Somer Brodribb, the committee consisted of five female undergraduate students, and sought to address concerns about the experiences of female students at the University. The committee’s report, released in 1993, issued recommendations aimed at making the University more hospitable to women and tackling gender discrimination issues.

The response to this report from tenured professors of the political science department led to a series of events highlighting the complexities of academic reform. Despite the controversies, these events underscored the University of Victoria's commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment. To learn more about these developments, you can visit the University of Victoria Libraries Special Collections. Through these ups and downs, the University of Victoria has remained steady in its commitment to provide world-class education to its students. Now, as then, the University is firmly committed to lighting the path of knowledge for all.

So there you go, a whirlwind tour of the rich and turbulent history of an institution that has stood the test of time to become one of the top universities in Canada. For those of you wanting to study abroad, the University of Victoria offers a diverse and challenging environment that's steeped in history and aimed at fostering innovation and intellectual growth.
