Back in the day, circa 1970, an exciting thing happened in the picturesque city of Kamloops, British Columbia. A swell of visionaries decided it was high time to turn heads in the academic sphere, et voila! Cariboo College was born, the predecessor of the Thompson Rivers University we know and love today.
The freshly minted Cariboo College burst onto the scene, delivering top-tier education with a pioneering touch! Hang on though, folks! This ain't just any old tale of a university opening its doors. Cariboo College breaks the mold—it wove, nay, stitched! Its education ethos right into the social fabric of Kamloops.
Some brilliant minds pulled up their socks and joined forces to steer the college. Folks like Superintendent Dave Forrester and Kamloops School Board, who knew the value of edumacation, were now at the helm. And boy, did they steer well! Throughout the 70s and 80s, Cariboo College snowballed, pulling more and more inquisitive minds towards it.
In 1989, not one to rest on its laurels, this dynamo of a college did a quick costume change. And, drum roll, please! Cariboo College was rechristened University College of the Cariboo (UCC)!
Things didn't stop there, no sirree! Come 2004, the UCC shook hands with the British Columbia Open University. With a twinkle in their eyes, the two institutions joined forces and the Thompson Rivers University came into existence.
Don't you think for a moment that the folks at TRU just sat back and relaxed once the deed was done. The ball was set rolling in 2005 when TRU got its first Chancellor, Nancy Greene Raine, a lady with a knack for kicking and screaming to set things right. It was a cherry on top when, in 2008, TRU became a fully-fledged member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC).
Today, TRU is a hotshot stopover for students from far and wide. Its departments and faculties range from Education and Social Work to Computing Science and Respiratory Therapy, few of many lines of study offered. If you've got it in you to chase dreams, you're welcome to join the 14,000-strong student population.
To wrap things up, eh - Thompson Rivers University, with its rich and varied tapestry woven from the threads of Cariboo College and UCC, has something for everyone. It offers a world of opportunity for those who have the grit, gumption, and - ahem - the guts to dive in. Cheers to TRU—come rain or shine, keeping the lamp of knowledge burning brighter than ever!
