History Bangor University

Imagine it's October 18, 1884, the University College of North Wales (UCNW), now known as Bangor University, was on the cusp of being born. The inauguration was as grand as it gets - initiated by the Earl of Powis, the first president, at Penrhyn Hall, followed by a massive procession that included 3,000 quarrymen, who had donated more than 1,200 pounds to the university cause. This was more than just the establishment of an institute, it was the victory of a powerful campaign aimed at fostering better higher education in Wales.

By 1885, the college was recognized by the Royal Charter. Back then, their students secured degrees from the University of London, but that changed in 1893 when the UCNW became a key part of the federal University of Wales. But, this glittering start wasn't without a share of controversy. Before long, a dispute rattled it causing the Women's Hall to close and leading Frances Hughes, the eye of the storm, to leave the college.

Cut to the Second World War, a fascinating slice of the university's heritage unfolded when it housed valuable artworks from national galleries in its Prichard-Jones Hall, safeguarding them from enemy bombings. These works of art later found refuge in the slate mines at Blaenau Ffestiniog. Students from the University College London sought the protection of Bangor too, continuing their study in this safer haven.

The 1960s was the age of expansion for higher education across the UK and the UCNW rode the wave. More departments, new buildings, and one unfortunate accident during an extension of the Department of Electronic Engineering in Dean Street. It was a grim day on November 22, 1965, when a construction crane collapsed on the building. Thankfully, a potential disaster was averted just thirty minutes before a class of 80 first-year students was supposed to occupy the lecture theatre hit by the crane's counterweight.

In 1967, UCNW welcomed the spiritual leader Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who held lectures on Transcendental Meditation. This was where The Beatles received the news of their manager, Brian Epstein’s, tragic death. The University experienced student protests in the 1970s too, mostly seeking to expand the role of the Welsh language. The protests were so intense at times that the Thatcher government considered shutting down the institute in the early 1980s. As chaos ensued, mergers were contemplated with two Bangor-based education colleges - St Mary's College and the Normal College/Coleg Normal. The amalgamation with St Mary's College was concluded in 1977, while the merger with Coleg Normal was finalized only in 1996.

Fast forward to 2007, the university adopted its modern name, Bangor University, following the significant transformation of the University of Wales. All students enrolling post-2009 received degrees from Bangor University. Interestingly, students who joined before 2009 had the option to display either the name Bangor University or University of Wales Bangor on their degree certificates.

The tenure (2010–18) of Vice-Chancellor John Hughes was marked by several key developments. These included the inauguration of St Mary's Student Village and the establishment of the first-ever collaboration between China and Wales. This collaboration led to a new college formed by Bangor University and the Central South University of Forestry and Technology (CSUFT).

In 2014, a £45m loan was extended by the European Investment Bank to further the university's estates strategy. The result of this was the establishment of Marine Centre Wales in 2016. Located on the university's Ocean Sciences campus in Menai Bridge, this £5.5m building was financed in part by the £25 million SEACAMS project, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

However, the university hit a rocky patch in 2017 when it needed to make savings of £8.5m. After several cost-saving measures, Bangor University reorganised some subject areas, revamped adult education and part-time degree programme delivery, continued to teach archaeology but discontinued the single honours course, and worked with Grwp Llandrillo Menai to validate the BA Fine Arts degree.

The university underwent three rounds of staff cuts between 2017 and 2019 due to financial constraints and changing working conditions. Many sites including Normal Site, Dean Street and Fron Heulog were disposed of during this period in an effort to consolidate the university's non-residential estate onto a single campus (Deiniol Road and College Road sites). As September 2020 rolled around, the university announced another round of cuts to cover a £13m budget deficit, leading to increased insecurity among staff.

Bangor University's history appears to have been as dramatic and colourful as the stunning Welsh landscape that surrounds it. From being
