History University of Bath

Once upon a time, back in 1595, the original seed was planted for what would eventually grow into the University of Bath. The origin lay in a humble school known as the Merchant Venturers' Technical College. This place of learning was anything but ordinary, boasting illustrious alumni like physicists Paul Dirac and Peter Higgs. By 1856, the institution had taken on the characteristics of a technical school in Bristol, and in 1885 it even became a part of the noble Society of Merchant Venturers.

Now, let's shift our gaze to the harmonizing city of Bath. Here a pharmaceutical school saw the light of the day in 1907, christened as the Bath School of Pharmacy. This institution honoured its root and merged with the Technical College in 1929. After another 20 years, in 1949, the Bristol Education Authority took charge of this now flourishing and ever-evolving college.

The college evolved, exhibiting chameleon-like agility. Initially, it wore the cloak of the Bristol College of Technology till it shed its old identity in 1960 to become the Bristol College of Science and Technology. This transformative phase occurred when it was one of the ten technical colleges operating under the Ministry of Education's guidance. Notably, the city's heart, the former Muller's Orphanage at Ashley Down in Bristol, housed this college. Some fragments of this building still serve learning as part of the City of Bristol College, while others make homes for the city residents.

1963 played a pivotal role in the college's destiny, with the Robbins Committee report indicating a bright future for the institution as the Bath University of Technology. Despite briefly considering the grounds of Kings Weston House as a location, it was finally decided that the burgeoning college needed an expansion-friendly site. After several rounds of dialogue between the College Principal and the Bath's Director of Education, an agreement was struck to move the college respectfully to Claverton Down, Bath, nestled on a verdant site. This piece of land was a fruitful acquisition from the Candy family of Norwood Farm.

Imagine the hustle and bustle as campus construction kicked off in 1964. Just within a span of a year, the edifice of the first building, referred to as 4 South, rose to prominence. An occasion of monumental significance occurred on 25 October 1966 when the coveted royal charter was bestowed on the institution. Fast forward to the following month, and you’d find the first degree ceremony unfolding at the grand Assembly Rooms in Bath. The university continued to blossom over the following decade, with each year churning out tremendous structural advancements.

Interestingly, the university’s logo is the time-honoured Gorgon's head borrowed from a Roman sculpture discovered in the city, traced back to the institution's coat of arms. You’ll also appreciate the unique relationship the university shares with the city, paying a symbolic peppercorn every year for renting a vast 140-acre land parcel.

In more recent times, following the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s report's publication on the university’s governance in November 2017, some vital changes were recommended to the institution's administration. Simultaneously, the university community voiced concerns over the Vice Chancellor’s remuneration, leading to several essential resignations and departures from the advisory board, including Glynis Breakwell, who held the highest paid Vice Chancellor's title.

The year 2018 saw significant changes, marked by the students' protests against the proposed pension reforms and the transition in the leadership with the appointment of Ian H. White as the new Vice-Chancellor in April 2019. Today, the University of Bath stands as an embodiment of resilience, growth, and reform through this illustrious history.
