Start way back in 1810, when the seeds of Queen's University Belfast were first sown. The city of Belfast saw the establishment of the Belfast Academical Institution, the ancestor of our beloved Queen's. The Academical Institution, later glorified as the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, is the proud forerunner of the legacy we carry forward today.
Fast forward to 1845, and the landscape of higher education in Ireland was about to shift. The name "Queen's College, Belfast" was born, welcoming eager minds to explore a world of knowledge. Together with its siblings, Queen's College, Cork, and Queen's College, Galway, they formed the splendid trio that was the Queen's University of Ireland. Their noble mission – to open doors of higher education to Catholics and Presbyterians, ending the monopoly held by Trinity College, Dublin - a dominantly Anglican institution.
By 1849, the Queen's College in Belfast stood tall and proud, its doors wide open to knowledge seekers. The heart of the college, the majestic Lanyon Building, owes its grandeur to the creative genius of the English-born architect, Sir Charles Lanyon. A showcase of elegance and strength, the building still stands as a testament to his vision.
The budding years of Queen's University Belfast saw the gathering of 23 distinguished professors guiding a vibrant batch of 195 students. The spirited pioneers found their academic calling, some even undertaking the prestigious University of London examinations.
As the years unravelled, so did changes in Ireland's academic scene. The Royal University of Ireland, which took over from Queen's University of Ireland in 1879, succumbed to the Irish Universities Act of 1908. This marked the creation of two autonomous entities – the National University of Ireland and our own Queen's University of Belfast.
An interesting footnote in the history pages of Queen's University Belfast is its unique political connection. It was among the exclusive select of eight UK universities that secured a seat at the House of Commons of Westminster. This rare privilege was in effect till 1950 when such representation was abolished.
But the Queen's voice continued to echo within the Parliament of Northern Ireland. From 1920 to 1968, our graduates had the honour of electing four members. This instance stands as a testament to both Queen’s stature and the high esteem in which our graduates were held.
Drawing from this rich tapestry of history and legacy, Queen's University Belfast today stands tall, embracing its past and shaping its future. Nurturing minds, transforming lives. Remember, you are not just stepping into a college: you are becoming part of a 200-year-old legacy that celebrates diversity, inclusiveness, and excellence.
