Believe it or not, Aston University's roots are anchored in the world of metallurgy from way back in 1875. The institution was born as a School of Metallurgy in the Birmingham and Midland Institute. Fast-forward twenty years to 1895, and the school separated from the Institute to build its canon of teachings which included chemistry, physics, metallurgy, and electrical engineering.
With the dawn of the 20th century, the institution was expanding like never before. Classes in commerce took birth in 1911, testing the academic waters and eventually growing into an independent School of Commerce by 1916. Yes, by 1917, the institution had even begun teaching botany amongst other subjects to budding teachers. Reflecting its changing academic approach, the name was changed in 1927 to Birmingham Central Technical College.
Flash into the 50s, and the institution was about to be reborn again. By 1951, the name had changed to College of Technology, Birmingham, and the construction of the Main Building at Gosta Green was initiated. Right in the middle of the decade in 1956, the college had the honor of becoming the first elite college of advanced technology. Put this into perspective, this monumental infrastructure undertaking is one of the largest freestanding brick buildings throughout Europe.
Yes, even Her Majesty, The Queen inaugurated the College of Advanced Technology in 1955. The momentum just kept building, leading to another architectural expansion designed by City Architect of Birmingham, Alwyn Sheppard Fidler, between 1957 and 1965. 1966 was the milestone year when our esteemed institution officially became the University of Aston in Birmingham – thanks to a Royal Charter received on April 22nd.
As far as academia went, the University had its priorities set clear from the start - to disseminate and apply learning and knowledge powered by research. Due credit goes to our innovative sandwich course system and our robust links with the industry that made this possible. In fact, our saying, "Forward", borrows from the City of Birmingham’s motto itself.
1983 was another powerful year - Aston University formed a partnership with Birmingham City Council as well as Lloyds Bank. The result? Birmingham Technology Ltd. - an entity that manages the prestigious Aston Science Park adjacent to the university site. Perhaps, the biggest recognition came when the area was awarded its very own postal address, "The Aston Triangle" in 1984 - yes, an official district of Birmingham.
Fast forward to 2010, when our beloved university hosted the British Science Festival, touted as Europe's largest public science event. Since May 2011, we've been graced with the leadership of Sir John Sunderland, our esteemed Chancellor of Aston University. In 2012, the University further expanded its academic footprint by becoming the lead sponsor of Aston University Engineering Academy, a university technical college for students aged 14-19 keen on pursuing further studies in engineering.
In 2015, Aston took a big leap into health sciences by launching Aston Medical School. The same year, we bravely announced a £35 million investment for a huge upgrade of the campus, including a £19 million makeover of Aston Business School. It didn't stop there, we brought about significant improvement work at the Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies and the School of Languages and Social Sciences.
2017 onwards, Aston University adopted the mantra of digital transformation. It launched online programmes for its MSc courses, and Aston Business School's MBA followed suit, making these programs accessible to students in the UK and worldwide. Later in the same year, Aston proudly became the first UK University to have degree apprenticeship graduates, credits to the unique degree apprenticeship launched in partnership with Capgemini: Digital and Technology Solutions in 2012.
However, fast forward to 2021, and Aston University faced some major changes with their plan to close the Department of History, Languages and Translation, focusing instead on health, engineering, and business. This decision did create a commotion among the academic fraternity, leading to protests from various quarters. Despite the heavy criticism, the University resuscitated the History programme while continuing with the language instruction cuts. Despite the challenges, Aston University continues to thrive, always looking forward.
