History Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

In the auspicious year of 1886, a new musical institution came into being – the Birmingham School of Music. This institution was a unified effort, consolidating the many vibrant music education initiatives of the Birmingham and Midland Institute. A brief journey into the past reveals how the ambitious idea of formal music instruction was established.

Rewinding back to 1854, the Birmingham and Midland Institute had a humble beginning with informal music lessons. Its predecessor, the Birmingham Philosophical Institution, had been offering music classes for half a century, since 1800. However, it was not until 1859, a period that sparked a formal part of the institute's curriculum – singing classes.

Though initial efforts met with challenges, they didn’t diminish the passion for music. Instead, the dedication bore fruit as by 1863, the institution boasted 110 performing students, regular concerts began to take shape. Showcasing the spirit of innovation and progression, a proposal in 1876 pushed the boundaries even further.

Alfred Gaul, a remarkable composer, advocated for additional classes resembling the model of the Leipzig Conservatoire. With its inception, the music theory lessons began. This innovative methodology made the musical journey more engaging and comprehensive. More than teaching mere tunes, it imparted a deep understanding of music’s intricacies.

1882 marked a significant year as instrumental classes were introduced, luring in 458 enthusiastic students in the first year itself! What started as a separate music section within the institute paved the way for the birth of the "School of Music" in 1886. Thanks to William Stockley, its first principal, the musical journey continued; it was further enriched by the school's second principal Granville Bantock, recommended by the renown Edward Elgar.

Fast-forwarding to 1989, ‘Birmingham Conservatoire’ became the official name. Reflecting the internal structure of Orchestral, Creative, Keyboard, and Vocal Studies, the diploma and award were upgraded from 'Graduate/Associate of the Birmingham School of Music' to 'Graduate/Associate of the Birmingham Schools of Music'. The music degree got a new look in 1995, transforming from the GBSM diploma to a full-fledged Bachelor of Music (BMus) degree.

Progress continued steadily in the growing Conservatoire. In the 2008 reorganisation of faculties, it became a part of the Faculty of Performance, Media, and English (PME). A later merger expanded the boundaries as the Faculty of Arts, Design, and Media.

The turn of the century brought about a change of location. With the Conservatoire's former site subjected to compulsory purchase, the Birmingham City Council compensated with an impressive £29 million. The relocation was well-utilised, as by August 2017, the Conservatoire had moved into its new building on Jennens Road, designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, boasting an auditorium with a capacity of 500 seats.

In 2017, a significant merger occurred, combining the Birmingham School of Acting, a renowned drama school established in 1936, with the Conservatoire. This key move brought music and drama instruction under one roof, expanding the scope of learning further.

On 24 September 2017, the Conservatoire received a significant recognition. Thanks to Queen Elizabeth II's approval, it proudly adopted the 'Royal' prefix, becoming the esteemed Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

The legacy of the institution is carried forward by its notable alumni including Nicol Williamson, Tom Lister, Catherine Tyldesley, and others, who continue to make their mark in the world of music and performing arts.
