History University of Birmingham

Imagine walking the halls of an institution that traces its formation back to the Queen's College and the Christian-rooted ideals of its founder, William Sands Cox. In 1828, his early teachings sparked the establishment of the Birmingham Medical School that grew out of the Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary. And guess what? The medical apprentices there had held the first medical education lectures in England way back in 1767–68, long before the school was even founded.

Now fast forward to the 1870s, and enter Sir Josiah Mason — the Birmingham industrialist who made his fortune in key rings, pens, and electroplating. With his generous philanthropy, he laid the groundwork for what would become the University of Birmingham by establishing the Mason Science College in 1875. A whole range of science subjects were soon taught at the college, propelling its importance in the academic world.

By 1898, all this work culminated in Mason University College being incorporated as a university college, with Joseph Chamberlain at the helm of its Court of Governors. The big turning point was in 1900 when Queen Victoria granted a royal charter to the university; such was Chamberlain's passion and commitment. With ancestral land donated by the Calthorpe family and a vision to complete the original buildings, the University of Birmingham found its permanent home.

The University didn't just stop there. Ever expanding its educational frontiers, it emboldened the commercial sciences by appointing Sir William Ashley as the first Professor of Commerce in 1901. Then, celebrated composer Edward Elgar carried the baton of Peyton Professor of Music from 1905 to 1908. All this while preserving its unique cultural heritage within the walls of its Cadbury Research Library. Delve into its rich vault and you'll get acquainted with Birmingham's pivotal role as a military hospital during the First World War!

Continuing in the milestone-laden journey, the university made a bold move by appointing its first-ever woman professor in 1921, Linetta de Castelvecchio to inspire more female academics. It even played a formative role in developing institutions like the University of Rhodesia and University of Warwick in the 60s and 70s while hosting prominent figures like Malcolm X.

From Nobel Prize laureates, like Sir Norman Haworth and Sir Peter Medawar, to the development of the cavity magnetron vital to the Allied victory in World War II, the University of Birmingham's legacy is a canvas painted with breakthroughs and great minds. The university had a vital role to play in numerous significant advancements in various scientific fields, standing testament to its undisputed reputation as a leading research university.

As the 21st century arrived, the university explored the possibility of integrating itself with Aston University. Although plans were stalled, it's an example of the university's commitment to continual growth. If you ever watch the first-ever televised leaders' debate during the 2010 British general election campaign, you'll notice it was hosted right here at the university!

Our story rounds off to today, where a new library and sports center stand as symbols of the university's modern growth. Yes, it has faced challenges ranging from handling occupational protests to investigating allegations of campus crimes. Still, its commitment to learning and development stands undeterred.

Having evolved from an 1828 medical school to a world-class university of today, the University of Birmingham is more than an institution. It's an engaging narrative of academic excellence, cultural diversity, scientific breakthroughs, and societal resilience; a story that continues to inspire and instruct future generations.
