Let's jump back in time to 1901. An educational institution sprang to life in Holloway, North London, christened Duncombe Hall College. Its original mission? To mould exceptional church workers and ministers. However, this was just the first flutter of wings for what was to become Newbold College of Higher Education.
The college, like an apprentice sculptor, underwent several name changes before it finally unearthed its identity. It adopted the name Newbold during the dark days of World War II, borrowing from its location – Newbold Revel, nestled to the east of Rugby, Warwickshire.
But the tale of Newbold’s wartime years doesn't end there. Its other home during these tumultuous times, was Packwood Haugh – a serene gem tucked away between Solihull and Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire. Change, they say, is the only constant. And for Newbold, change was fast approaching.
In 1945, with its dazzling crown firmly set, Newbold College purchased Moor Close. It was space waiting to be breathed into by education. A tapestry of learning that expanded to become the campus we look upon today. What possibly led to this choice? It was the college's strategic alignment - blessed with the proximity of the famed Oxford and the pulse of London. And at the same breath, it is nestled conveniently close to Heathrow Airport.
Moor Close is a sight to behold. Built in 1881, it's a Grade II listed redbrick Jacobethan house exuding an air of antiquated charm. But in 1914, this architectural gem was polished by none other than the remarkable Oliver Hill. A financier by the name of Charles Birch Crisp commissioned Hill to modernise the residence while keeping intact its historic allure.
The house finds itself set amongst the terraced gardens, another canvas brought to life by Hill. Created between 1910–13, the gardens are a harmonious blend of differing levels of terraces, each linked by captivating circular steps. These stunning gardens are listed Grade II* in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
Now, come with me as we explore more of these sprawling grounds. You will find courts, pergolas, staircases, balustrades, and even lily pools gracing the area. Observe the stone bridge built by Hill, leading to a place of serenity─ Sylvia's Garden, fondly christened after Crisp's daughter.
