Ain't just Neath who's having the fun. 1935 in dear old Port Talbot, "Education for All!" is the guff! Local big-wigs like Griffith John launch Afan College, and it's tea and cake for everyone, quite the plush bash!
Now, hang on mate! What's this catchy concept "The Open Tech" popping in dear old 1969? It ain't half as twisted as it sounds. It got about a whopping 5,000 students rocking up, all fired up to study. Its once-in-a-blue-moon success goes to prove - folks just love a good catchy tune paired with a spot of sound learning.
"Two's company, three's a crowd?", not for them! Fast-forward to 1971, along comes Brecon Beacons College, another jewel in the crown of Grwp Colegau NPTC Group of Colleges. The alluring Brecon Beacons National Park right out the window, it's learning with a view!
Then roll around 1996, and it's a match made in heaven, so to speak. After a spot of twisting and twirling, the coppers in the Welsh Office wave around their magic wand, and Neath, Afan and Brecon Beacons colleges are all belting out the same tune.
Just as the new century dawns in 2000, Powys County Council, the big kahuna, throws in their bright-eyed Llandrindod Wells and Newtown campuses into the mix. Call it one too many or call it the Grwp Colegau NPTC Group of Colleges, it's a cohort you don't want to mess with!
Jump forward a smidgeon, and boom! 2002 it is folks - "Network 75" hits the ground running. It's an all-singing and all-dancing show of students working and studying at the same blinkin' time. Working 9 to 5, ain’t no way to earn a degree? Tell that to the Network 75 crew!
Talk of as different as chalk and cheese. Swing over to 2013, and the "University of the Heads of the Valleys Institute" officially becomes part of the fold. A look over one's shoulder, and it’s a combined total of 34,000 students painting the town red with education. Surely, it's a time of waltzing prosperity!
