In the beginning, there stood two strong pillars - Beverley College and East Yorkshire College. Their fated merger in March 2002 led to the birth of East Riding College as we know it today. Here's a journey down the memory lane.
Our story takes off in the early 1950s. Picture the quiet town of Bridlington that is about to witness the establishment of Bridlington Technical Institute - the cornerstone for East Yorkshire College. By July 1971, the institute had found a home on West Street, Bridlington.
Fast forward to 1978. With a united effort of around 80 faculty and staff members, the Institute gloriously evolved into Bridlington College of Further Education. It's the era of change, and the thirst for education is unquenchable!
In 1981, a significant twist took place. Bridlington College merged with Driffield College of Further Education and lo! East Yorkshire College was established. The next significant milestone was in 1983 when the college embraced a factory site in Bessingby, catalyzing an increase in its vocational courses.
Let's jump to 1985. Life at the college was now bustling on St. Mary's Walk! The student community was growing stronger. By 1989, over 5,000 people had enrolled, with a robust 900 students attending full-time. The year 1990 saw a further incline in the student count. With around 6,000 enrollments and 1,000 students attending full-time, East Yorkshire College was thriving.
Now, let's talk about adult education. Back in the day, the college was a major provider for adults in the East Riding of Yorkshire. In association with the Humberside County Council adult education service, it was making great strides in community learning. However, in April 1993, the college decided to spread the wings and stepped out of local authority control.
Fast forward to October 1996, the college proudly stood as the second-largest employer in Bridlington, with a whopping 289 members of staff! The student strength was also skyrocketing with 900 full-time students and more than 2,000 studying short courses.
However, despite this upward momentum, dark clouds loomed over East Yorkshire College in 1996. The institution grappled with financial difficulties. A new principal took charge in August 1996, and swift changes swept the college. This restructuring reduced the number of senior managers and teaching staff, which somewhat stabilized the difficult financial situation.
Proposing a merger between Beverley College and East Yorkshire College might have seemed ideal. With strong support from the East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Bishop Burton College, the idea was favored. A consultation period followed, ending with a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Education to allow the merger. By August 2001, the two colleges, with a hefty total enrollment of around 10,000 students, were proposed to merge.
And thus, as the calendar flipped to March 2002, the merger took place. The new entity, now known as East Riding College, was determined to be "at the heart of the community". This commitment was evident through its main sites in Beverley and Bridlington, and their smaller ones which at that time were based in Carnaby, Driffield, Hornsea, Full Sutton, and Wakefield.
But the journey was not always silk-smooth. In May 2004, as an aftermath of the merger, 35 jobs were slashed. The unfortunate redundancies affected mainly administrative and support staff role. Even some teaching roles could not escape the cut. But the college carried on.
Through ups and downs, East Riding College has stayed resilient. Today, it stands as a beacon of education, empowering students across the globe. And who knows you could be a part of its future!
