Long before we knew it as University of Brighton, it was back in 1859 that a bunch of jolly good fellas decided to lay the cornerstone for something amazing - Brighton School of Art. And boy oh boy, wasn't that an auspicious start! Despite beginning in a room above the public baths, potential students didn't let the smell of chlorine and rubber ducks deter them. It was from this humble beginning that the school grew, with more courses and departments added over the following years.
Realising they could boost their credibility, these arty pioneers found themselves a more traditional home in 1876 at the Royal Pavilion. The royally grand surroundings, struck a chord and the modest art school re-emerged as a Municipal School of Science and Art. Besides dabbling in art gizmos, these bright minds also ventured into science and technology.
Throughout the 20th century, the institution continued to grow, quite like a jack-in-the-bean-stalk, taking big leaps forward. In 1970, they were given the thumbs up to award degrees and guess what they did? They took the baton and ran, expanding and diversifying their courses even more.
By 1992, our little art school had mushroomed into something far grander. It emerged from its chrysalis, taking a bow as the University of Brighton. Pretty neat, right? With courses splashed across the palette ranging from art and design to business and technology, Brighton was on the map, big and bright.
