History University of Sussex

Once upon a time, bustling with an ambitious goal in 1911, Brighton's Royal Pavilion witnessed a significant public gathering. The agenda? Finding the resources to establish a university in Sussex. However, World War I knocked on the doors of the world, pushing the project back. Instead, the gathered funds flowed towards expanding the book collection of the Municipal Technical College.

Fast forward to the vibrant 1950s, the plan regained momentum and finally, in June 1958, the government approved Brighton's first university. Now, this was no ordinary institution. It served as a pioneer in the new genre of 'plate glass universities,' breaking the ice in the UK after the Second World War, alongside Keele University.

The doors of this remarkable establishment opened in 1959, breaking traditional boundaries of academic compartments. Imagine, an arts student soaking in the world of sciences in their first year! This refreshing model is a tribute to Professor Asa Briggs, who hailed this unique approach as a new map of learning.

From a modest start with 52 students in 1961, the university's popularity soared, enrolling 3,200 students by 1967. Its initial abode was the Knoyle Hall in Brighton, but they soon moved to the spectacular Falmer campus in 1962. The edgy modernist architecture of the campus was not just a delight to the eye, but it also won numerous accolades.

The student union never missed a chance to spice up university life, organising concerts and events. Bet you didn't know that Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, and Chuck Berry have performed at the University Common Room!

Of course, the list of intellectual heavyweights associated with Sussex University is noteworthy. From Asa Lord Briggs, Helmut Pappe, Gillian Rose, Jennifer Platt, to Tom Bottomore, their mark is undeniably embedded in the heritage of this university. Not to forget, the Subaltern Studies Group, kick-started by Ranajit Guha between 1962 and 1981.

When the world knocked on Sussex's door for policy recommendations, the university never stepped back. In the 1960s, a team contributed to the legendary Sussex Manifesto on behalf of the United Nations. No wonder the university was often associated with student radicalism!

In the growing years, Sussex won the famous University Challenge quiz twice, once in 1967 and again in 1969. Furthermore, it topped Oxford University's income from research grants and contracts in 1980.

Embracing the changing tides of time, the university swapped its traditional coat of arms with the "US" logo in 2004 to relate to a modern audience. Marching towards its semicentennial in 2011, the university raised over £51.3 million in its first major fundraising campaign, Making the Future.

A strategic plan from 2009-2015 brought about core changes, including new academic courses, research centres, and an extensive expansion of student housing facilities. The university committed to invest around £500 million on-campus redevelopment by 2021.

Sussex University also cherishes its relationship with its surroundings. It's involved in numerous community projects and facilitates guidance on rental matters. Additionally, it offers language courses for the community through its Sussex Centre for Language Studies.

The financial contributions of the university cannot be overlooked. In 2015-16, it contributed over £407 million to the UK economy and over £74.9 million in tax receipts.

In recent years, the university took significant steps like appointing Saul Becker as the first Provost and Jayne Aldridge as the first permanent Director for Student Experience. They also moved all their investments out of fossil fuels in 2018, led by a four-year campaign by the student union.

In 2021, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Sussex stood out from most universities by choosing to return to in-person teaching. Despite all controversies and challenges over the years, the University of Sussex stands tall, continuing to empower education and nurture future leaders.
